The Growth And Decline Of Farming In Brookfield

BROOKFIELD CENTER — The Brookfield Museum and Historical Society will host a forum on the evolution of farming in Brookfield. It will be held at Brookfield Public Library, 188 Whisconier Road (Route 25), Sunday, October 10, at 2 pm.

Historical Society President John Furlong will host the program and chair a discussion panel. The presentation will be complemented with multimedia images of early farming, including apple, dairy, poultry and tobacco production.

Photos of old farms in the various sections of town including Obtuse South, the Ironworks District, the Candlewood lake area, the Still River Valley and the southern Route 7 portion of the community will be shown. Among the subjects to be explored include the reasons for the major decline in the areas farming from the 1950 to its final stages in 1978. 

Admission is free and the public is invited. Longtime Brookfield residents are especially encouraged to attend and share their memories.

Light refreshments will be served.
