Nighthawk Wrestling, Hockey, Gymnastics, and Swimming Update

Newtown High School’s wrestling team capped off its regular campaign with a 59-18 Senior Night win over the New Fairfield Rebels, on February 11. Also that night, the hockey team lost to Masuk of Monroe. Newtown’s gymnastics team competed in regular-season meets on February 6 and 10, as they geared up to participate in the South-West Conference championships, in New Milford, on February 12. The boys’ swimming and diving team had several strong performances in a 97-86 loss at Brookfield, on February 10. Here’s an update of these squads:

On The Wrestling Mats

Wrestling captains Luca Crudo, Matt Gonzalez, James Leuci, and Connor LeMay, along with Logan Walsh and Stephen Grasso were honored during the Senior Night celebration. Newtown’s winners are as follows:

106. Tom Leuci won via pin in 1:23.

126. Ed Lovely won via pin in :40.

132. Owen Walsh won via forfeit.

138. Matt Gonzalez won via pin in :43.

145. James Leuci won via pin in 1:40.

152. Joe Accousti won via forfeit.

170. Anthony Falbo won via technical fall, 27-12.

182. Logan Walsh won via pin in 2:53.

195. Andy Hubina won via pin in :50

220. Tom Long won via pin in 2:52.

The Nighthawks are set to challenge for the South-West Conference title in the Saturday, February 14 championships at Bunnell High School in Stratford. Last year, Newtown was runner-up to New Milford in a close finish.

Hockey Team Battles

The hockey team got goals from Domenic Cartelli and Sean Ferris in a 7-2 loss to Masuk, at The Rinks at Shelton. Ethan Cox assisted Cartelli’s net-finder, which was scored on the power play. Newtown goaltender Nicholas Chaloux played two periods and made 25 saves, and John McCann was in net for a stanza and kicked away five shots.

Newtown gets back on the ice on Monday, February 16, when Mt Everett, Mass. Visits Danbury Ice Arena for a 2 pm puck drop.

Gymnasts Compete

Newtown High’s gymnastics team hosted Trumbull at Kinetic Kids in Oxford on February 6, and visited New Milford on February 10. The Nighthawks were scheduled to participate in the South-West Conference championships, also in New Milford, on February 12.

In the February 6 meet, Newtown scored 120 points and Trumbull had 126.15. Newtown’s Anna Jannott scored an 8.6 on the vault, 8.1 on the balance beam, and an 8.15 for her floor exercise. Maddie Jannott recorded an 8.3 on the vault, and Sammie Gilbert had an 8.2 on the vault. In the February 10 competition, Newtown scored 119.85, New Milford had 128.2, Joel Barlow of Redding scored 111.6, and Oxford had 95.5. Anna Jannott had an 8.6 on vault, 8.2 on beam, and 8.6 on the floor 8.6. Gilbert scored an 8.3 on vault, and Maddie Jannott had an 8.0 on vault.

After the SWC meet, the Hawks have one more competition, February 20 against Weston and Joel Barlow of Redding, before the state championships take place.

In The Pool

The Nighthawk swimmers recorded several top-four finishes, including three firsts, in a variety of events against Brookfield, as follows:

200 yard medley relay: 2. Tommy Horan, Seth Barrett, Matt Argraves, Owen Gray, 1:47.70.

200 free: 4. Peter Fagerholm, 2:01.72.

200 individual medley: 3. Caelan Ritter, 2:24.25.

50 free: 2. Layton Harrell, 23.87.

Diving: 2. Andrew Lally, 166.50.

100 butterfly: 1. Seth Barrett, 58.78.

100 free: 1. Horan, 51.42

500 free: 2. Fagerholm, 5:17.82.

200 free relay: 2. Harrell, Barrett, Argraves, Gray, 1:41.22.

100 backstroke: 1. Horan, 57.93.

100 breaststroke: 2. Barrett, 1:07.46.

400 free relay: 3. Fagerholm, Andy Braun, Harrell, Horan 3:47.38.

The Nighthawks will close out the regular season on Wednesday, February 18, when Joel Barlow of Redding visits for a 7 pm start. After a break from competition, the Hawks will compete in the South-West Conference championships in early March; the diving portion of the finals will take place in New Fairfield on March 4, and the swimming events will unfold at Masuk High in Monroe on March 6.
