Mavs Compete In Tourney

Newtown’s fourth-grade girls’ basketball team, the Mavericks, competed in the Brewster League playoffs last week and lost by just a point in the championship game. In the first round, the Mavericks faced a solid Somers team and got outstanding defensive play, causing numerous turnovers and preventing Somers from getting into an offensive rhythm.

The score was tight all game, but the Mavs were able to hold onto the lead for a 9-7 victory.

In the championship game two days later, the Mavericks faced their archrivals, the fierce Back2Basics team from the Bronx. Down by six at the half, the Mavs rallied to tie the score. The lead shifted a few more times, with the Mavs totally dominating play in the second half. The team created numerous scoring opportunities and had many good looks, but the baskets just were not dropping. The girls played their hearts out until the final buzzer, coming up just short, 11-10.  

Members of the Mavericks team are Lauren Adams, Kim Buttery, Kristen Cirone, Tess Davenport, Alison Kelleher, Jenna Lavelle, Jackie Matthews, Nicki DaPra , Carolina Stubbs, and Sarah Widmann.
