Although calm at the moment, Connecticut — and many surrounding states — is under a High Wind Warning today.

Newtown is under a warning issued by the National Weather Service-New York, NY office, which remains in effect until 6 pm this evening.

“Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines,” according to the warning, issued at 3:57 am Monday, February 25. “Scattered power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles,” the announcement continues.

A High Wind Warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage, the weather service advises.

Massachusetts, southern Maine, southern New Hampshire, southern Vermont, the southern, central and western sections of New York, most of Pennsylvania, all of New Jersey, and all of Delaware are also under High Wind Warnings.

In this immediate area, according to the weather service, there is a 30 percent chance of snow showers before 10 am. The day is expected to be otherwise sunny but cold, with a high near 34. Wind chill values will be between 15 and 20 degrees.
