SUV Into Barrier

State police report that at about 8:06 am on March 3, motorist Caidan Smith, 29, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe SUV on Interstate 84's Exit 11 on-ramp, struck some concrete barriers positioned along the left road shoulder.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Smith to Danbury Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, state police said. Smith received an infraction for failure to maintain the proper lane, according to state police.

Shoplifting Incident

Police report that on the evening of March 3, they arrested Adana Nguyen, 24, of Brookfield on a warrant, charging her with one count of fifth-degree larceny.

Police said the arrest stems from a complaint made on November 15, 2017, in which an unspecified merchant at Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street reported an incident of shoplifting. Fifth-degree larceny involves the theft of items valued at between $500 and $1,000.

After processing, police released Nguyen on $500 bail for a March 15 court appearance.

Subaru Into Yard

Police report that at about 4:57 pm on March 2, motorist Maxwell Roberts, 17, of Newtown, who was driving a 2002 Subaru Impreza eastward on Melody Lane, dropped an item inside the vehicle and then bent over to pick it up. In doing so, Roberts' foot became stuck at the accelerator pedal and the vehicle accelerated and went out of control, police said.

The Subaru went off the roadway and struck a curbside mailbox at 3 Melody Lane, after which it crossed a lawn and then came to rest against some brush, police said. There were no injuries. Police report that Roberts was not properly licensed and did not have a proper driving instructor traveling with him.

Police report they issued Roberts an infraction for making a restricted turn and for driving without a license.

Moving Violations

Police report they encountered two vehicles traveling on Berkshire Road, near its intersection with Toddy Hill Road, about 7:46 pm on March 1, and both vehicles bore rear marker plates with the same numbers, so police stopped the drivers to investigate.

Police said their investigation found that one of the two vehicles had just been purchased and that the rear marker plate on it had been taken off the front end of the other vehicle. The purchased vehicle did not have the proper plate on it and was not insured, police said.

Police said they charged motorist Jeanette Cruz, 47, of Bridgeport with improper use of marker plates and with failure to have automotive insurance. Also, police charged motorist Isaac Mateo-Rodriguez, 35, of Bridgeport with failure to display a front marker plate and with driving with a suspended license. Both people are scheduled to appear on March 15 in court to answer the charges, police said.

Vehicular Violations

Police report they stopped a motorist at a business on Mt Pleasant Road, near its intersection with Hawleyville Road, due to suspected issues regarding its registration and marker plates at about 7:05 pm on February 28.

After investigating, police charged William Pereira, 37, of Newtown with failure to display a front marker plate, misuse of marker plates, and driving an unregistered vehicle. Pereira is scheduled to appear in court on March 13, police said.

Camry Vs Camry

Police report a two-vehicle accident on Mt Pleasant Road, near its intersection with Hawleyville Road, about 9:18 am on February 28, which involved two Toyota Camry sedans.

In that incident, motorist Catherine Winteringham, 63, of Culver City, Calif., who was driving a 1998 Camry, struck the rear end of 2008 Camry driven by Daniel Cummings, 22, of Sandy Hook, police said. There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Winteringham for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Hawleyville Collision

A two-vehicle accident occurred on Hawleyville Road, near its intersection with Barnabas Road, about 8:04 am on February 28, police said.

Southbound motorist Jacqueline Bamas-Delgado, 40, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Express van, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by southbound motorist Kyle Oberndorfer, 53, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2015 Nissan Altima, police said.

There were no injuries. Police report they verbally warned Oberndorfer for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Two Charges

Police report that at about 7:44 pm on February 28, bail agents brought to the police station Arelis Vega, 35, of Bridgeport, who was then arrested on two warrants.

Police charged Vega with first-degree failure to appear in court in connection with her being a fugitive from justice in Ohio. Police arrested her on a charge of second-degree failure to appear in court in connection with motor vehicle violations. Vega was held on $102,500 bail in the police lockup for arraignment on the charges on March 1 in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury.

Church Hill Road Crash

Police report a two-car accident on Church Hill Road about 9:16 am on February 27.

Police said motorist Blanca Guzman, 64, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2015 Nissan Sentra, was attempting to exit the driveway at the Wheels Citgo gas station at 67 Church Hill Road, as motorist Teresa Pellicano, 25, of Bethany was driving a 2002 Subaru Legacy westward on Church Hill Road.

The two vehicles collided. Guzman was checked at the scene by emergency medical personnel, but refused ambulance transport, police said. Guzman received a verbal warning for failure to grant the right of way, police report.

Truck Hits Wall

At about 10:16 pm on February 27, motorist David Athans, 65, of Sandy Hook was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck northward on Toddy Hill Road, near Vining Road, when a deer ran out onto the roadway, police said.

Athans swerved to the left to avoid striking the animal, but the truck then traveled off the road and struck a stone wall, police report. There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Athans for failure to maintain the proper lane.

Items Stolen

Police report that sometime between 8 pm on Monday, February 26, and 6:52 am on Tuesday, February 27, someone illegally entered an unlocked motor vehicle parked near a house on Taunton Lake Drive, near its intersection with Mt Pleasant Terrace, and stole unspecified valuable items from within the vehicle.

Police ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact investigating police Officer Steve Borges at the police station at 203-426-5841. To deter such thefts from vehicles police urge that residents both lock their vehicles and remove any valuables from within them when the vehicles are unattended.

I-84 DUI

State police report that at about 11:52 am on February 25, they responded to westbound Interstate 84, near Exit 11, to investigate a reported accident involving two vehicles.

In that incident, motorist Ross Markey, 25, of New Milford, who was driving a 2006 Acura RSX coupe, struck the rear end of a 2011 Hyundai Elantra, state police said. There were no injuries.

State police said they arrested Markey on charges of driving under the influence (second offense), avoiding the use of or tampering with an ignition interlock device, following too closely, and failure to have automotive insurance.

After arrest processing, state police released Markey on $1,000 bail for a March 15 court appearance.

Bad Checks

Police report that on the afternoon of February 24 they served an arrest warrant against Justin Gaydosh, 33, of Newtown, charging him with two counts of issuing a bad check in connection with 2017 incidents. After processing, Gaydosh was released for a March 9 court appearance, police said.

Subaru Vs Toyota

At about 4:56 pm on February 24, motorist Noelle Raiano, 44, of Newtown, who was driving a 1999 Toyota Camry sedan westward on Berkshire Road, near its intersection with High Rock Road, slowed for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by a westbound 2017 Subaru Legacy sedan driven by Jacob Duarte, 18, of Sandy Hook, police said.

There were no injuries. Duarte received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, police said.

South Main Accident

At about 12:44 pm on February 24, motorist Maureen Devine, 66, of Meriden, who was driving a vehicle northward on South Main Street, near Bryan Lane, stopped for traffic conditions, after which northbound motorist Marcia Duffy 61, of New London, who was driving a 2002 Honda Accord, struck the rear end of Devine's vehicle, police report.

There were no injuries. Duffy received an infraction for following too closely, police said.

Three MV Violations

At about 10 pm on February 23, police stopped a 2002 Buick Century sedan traveling near the intersection of Berkshire Road and High Rock Road because the marker plate on the Buick apparently did not match the vehicle being driven, according to police.

After investigating, police charged motorist Edward Carmon, 53, of New Haven with misuse of marker plates, driving with a suspended license, and failure to have automotive insurance. Police released Carmon on $100 bail for a March 9 court appearance.

Waterbury Man

Police report that after becoming aware of documentation problems with a vehicle traveling near the intersection of Wasserman Way and Trades Lane, police stopped motorist Roberto Ricciardella, 40, of Waterbury at about 11 pm on February 22.

After investigating, police charged Ricciardella with driving with a suspended license, driving with a suspended registration, and failure to have automotive insurance. Ricciardella was released on a written promise to appear in court on March 8.

DUI Arrest

Police report that at about 6:11 pm on February 22, they received a report informing them there was an erratic driver traveling near 173 South Main Street, so they responded to investigate.

Police said they found the auto in question at an entrance driveway at Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street. After investigating, police said they charged motorist Angel Rodriguez, 66, of Danbury with driving under the influence.

Rodriguez was released on $200 bail for a March 13 court appearance.

Evading Responsibility

According to police, at about 3:38 pm on February 22, a motorist who was driving a 2000 Jeep Wrangler SUV northward on Mt Pleasant Road, near Tory Lane, stopped for traffic conditions, after which the Jeep was struck from behind by an unknown person driving a Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck.

The Chevrolet's driver left the scene before police arrived. There were no injuries. Police are investigating.

Honda Vs Honda

Police said that an accident involving two Hondas occurred about 6:41 pm on February 21 at the intersection of South Main Street, Sugar Street, Main Street, and Glover Avenue.

Motorist Bridget Morrissey, 18, of Newtown, who was driving a 2018 Honda CR-V SUV northward on South Main Street, was attempting to make a left turn onto westbound Sugar Street, as motorist Michael Jacques, 59, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2005 Honda Civic southward on Main Street, was attempting to proceed straight through the intersection to South Main Street, police said.

The two vehicles collided. Police said Jacques was transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries. Morrissey received an infraction for failure to grant the right of way, according to police.

Rear-Ender

Police report that at about 11:31 am on February 19, motorist Brianna Giglio, 16, of Newtown, who was driving a 2003 Infiniti I35 sedan westward on Church Hill Road, near Edmond Road, struck the rear end of a westbound 2017 Kenworth T-880 truck driven by Steven Tesar, 43, of New Fairfield.

There were no injuries. Giglio received a written warning for following too closely, police said.

SUV Damaged

At about 4 pm on February 18, someone who was driving a small white SUV struck a parked 2017 Subaru Outback SUV in a commercial parking lot at 14 Church Hill Road, damaging the Subaru and then leaving the scene, police said. The offender's vehicle likely would have damage to its front/left quadrant, police said.

Police ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact them at 203-426-5841 in connection with Case #2018-3741.

Motorcyclist Michael Walker, 64, of Danbury was listed in fair condition on February 28 in Danbury Hospital, where he is a patient being treated for injuries he received in a February 21 motorcycle accident on Hawleyville Road. Police said Walker was riding a 2002 Honda VT-1100-C2 northward on Hawleyville Road and approaching its intersection with Currituck Road at about 2:13 pm, when for some reason he drove off the right side of the road and traveled down an embankment. Walker was not wearing a helmet, police said. Hawleyville volunteer firefighters and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance personnel responded to the accident. Police are investigating and ask anyone who saw the accident occur to contact them at 203-426-5841. Officer Charles Guernsey is investigating.
