The Newtown Service Unit of Girl Scouts of Connecticut is celebrating the 107th year of the girl-focused program in the United States during Girl Scout Week, March 10-16. Girls ranging from kindergarten Daisies to high school Senior Girl Scouts recently met with First Selectman Dan Rosenthal to receive the Girl Scout Week Proclamation at the Municipal Center.

The First Selectmen spoke to the girls about volunteerism and civic responsibility before presenting the annual Girl Scout Week Proclamation.

Newtown Girl Scouts have been celebrating in the weeks leading up to Girl Scout Week with a new Cake Decorating Contest, a Slime-making STEM event that will ultimately support new programming at the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary, the Annual Girl Scout Pinewood Derby, and a “Stories of the Ballet” program in collaboration with the Newtown Centre of Classical Ballet and Voice, where Daisy and Brownie Girl Scouts earned the Dancer Try-It badge.

During the week, Newtown Girl Scouts will take part in theme days by wearing their uniforms, sporting their green attire, and wearing their pearls in honor of founder Juliette Gordon Lowe, who sold her own pearls to start the first troop. Some troops have plans to share Girl Scout traditions during morning school announcements and in addition, the Newtown Service Unit Team will be making some special cookie deliveries around town.

Senior Girl Scouts from Newtown High School will be visiting with legislators in Hartford, March 13, for Girl Scout Day at the Capitol, a program organized by Girl Scouts of Connecticut. Several troops will attend a Girl Scout Weekend at Camp Jewell in Colebrook to cap off the week with fun outdoor and indoor activities. Troops will also begin holding Cookie Booths in locations all around Newtown beginning on March 9 and running through the end of the month.

“We are happy to offer a variety of programming to our girls locally, from camping to STEM to arts and creative endeavors” said Heather Smith and Maria Konitshek, co-service unit managers for Newtown. “We are always happy to welcome new Girl Scouts and Leaders to the Service Unit.” More information can be found at gsofct.org.
