The Newtown High School dance team earned second place in both the Pom and Jazz categories at New England Regional championships this past weekend, capping off an ultra-successful season.

The Regional Championships were held on March 9 at South Burlington High School in Vermont. Braintree High school from Massachusetts won both routines. The top teams from the state competitions in New England were invited to compete at this event.

"This season had a different feel to start as we were competing Pom for the first time ever instead of Hip Hop. Our captains led the team very well and everyone fully embraced the change. We had an incredible season, winning championships at SWCs and States. We went to regionals to enjoy performing our routines one last time, savoring every moment with our four seniors and to come home with two second-place trophies was icing on the cake," Coach Emily Marks said.

Both routines were choreographed by Marks, assisted by Lindsay Brestovansky. Dance team captains are seniors Sara Olam and Mackenzie Roszman, along with junior Alexandra Kinsey. The rest of the championship roster includes seniors Emma Formica and Shirley Acero; juniors Devyn Reilly, Ava Warner, Ashley Schrader, Sofi Lapierre, Lillian Caico, and Lindsay Myer; sophomores Piper Adolfson, Kayla Sinapi, Aquinnah Schmidt, Phoenix Sealey, Kathryn Kavovit, Lila Spencer, Olivia Gulalo, Sienna Guaragno, Sophia Martinez, Kesslyn Alvarez, and Alexa Schmid; along with freshman Ava Geiger.

Newtown earned first place in the Jazz and Pom Exhibition routines at the South-West Conference Championships then won the Jazz State Championship for the seventh time.
