Mother Nature is not letting go of winter easily today. She is hanging on to winter like a stubborn lion, not a gentle lamb.

Newtown, and the region, is expected to see a little more snow before the Vernal Equinox arrives at 6:45 this evening.

According to the National Weather Service (New York, NY Office), snow is expected to arrive in Newtown “mainly after 1 pm,” and will continue well into the overnight hours. Accumulation of up to 5 inches is possible.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 2 am Saturday for northern Fairfield, northern New Haven, northern Middlesex and northern New London counties. Reduced visibility and slippery roads are expected, according to the advisory.

While air temperatures will reach a high of 34 degrees Friday, a southeast wind of 6 mph will lead to wind chill values between 20 and 25. Lows will be around 23 degrees during the overnight, with a northeast wind of 3-5 mph. Chance of snow on Friday is 80%, and for the overnight it's 90%.

By Saturday, the weather will return to mostly cloudy and a high of 42 degrees, according to the weather service.

Meanwhile, due to Friday's weather, early closings and cancellations are expected.

Newtown's Public School System, in fact, announced early Friday morning that the schools would be operating on an early dismissal schedule for Friday.

Tonight's performance of City of Angels, the NHS Drama production that opened last night, has been cancelled. Tickets purchased in advance for tonight will be good for the Saturday evening or Sunday matinee performances.

In addition, Parks & Recreation has announced that all afternoon and evening classes held at any of the schools have been cancelled today due to the weather.

All Parks & Rec activities scheduled at NYA Sports & Fitnes Center tonight have been cancelled. NYA will remain open for use by members, however.

Luck of The Irish Friday Night Bingo at St Rose of Lima School has been cancelled, as has this evening's Stations of the Cross at the church.

Late Friday afternoon, C.H. Booth Library Director Brenda McKinley announced the library would close for the day at 4 o'clock.

With heavy, steady precipitation outdoors, Ms McKinley said the sidewalks around the Main Street building could not be kept cleared.

"As fast as we shovel they are covered again," she said via email.

Additional groups, organizations, clubs and businesses with plans that will be affected by today's weather are invited to contact Newtown Bee Associate Editor Shannon Hicks, at 203-426-3141 or shannon@thebee.com, to have their announcement shared. Listings will be added to this story as they arrive, and also shared through Facebook and Twitter.
