The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) Spring Juried Show & Sale has opened at Art & Frame.

Show Chair Adele Moros said 73 works were accepted into the show during receiving hours on Monday, March 28. Judges spent time at the 77 Main Street gallery on Tuesday morning, and then Moros and a team of SCAN volunteers spent time hanging the juried collection, which fills the southernmost gallery space of Art & Frame.

“It’s up and hanging, and we know the award winners,” Moros said late Tuesday afternoon. “The hard part is done.”

The public is invited to the opening and awards reception planned for Saturday, April 2, from 6 to 8 pm. Awards will be announced at 7 pm. The spring presentation will remain on view until May 26.

Watching artists arrive during Monday’s receiving, and SCAN members processing the incoming pieces, Moros was very pleased to see this exhibition take its final steps toward opening.

“This show was two days away from opening two years ago when everything closed,” she said. “That was the beginning of the pandemic.”

SCAN has presented a few exhibitions during the past two years, including a large presentation at Newtown Municipal Center, but those were done with quiet installations and no public receptions. The spring presentation this year, Moros noted, is the 50th presentation of a spring juried show and sale, “but not our 50th annual, not after losing two years,” she said.

The show chair and judges — artists Susan Grisell, Dick McEvoy, and Jane Penfield — were very happy with the offerings for the new exhibition. Original watercolors, oils, acrylics, pastels, graphics, prints, sculpture, and mixed media were accepted mediums.

Moros said the judges on Tuesday “spent a lot of time deciding what was what. They were not dismissive. They thought there was a lot of really good work there.”

Thirteen awards will be announced during Saturday’s opening reception, including The Larry Newquist Award for Excellence, a best in show award that carries with it a $600 cash prize.

Art & Frame is open Monday through Saturday, 10 am-6 pm. The 50th SCAN Juried Art Show & Sale can be viewed during regular hours.

O’Sullivan is hosting the spring show and sale of original works by regional artists in his Main Street gallery and frame shop through the end of May.
