The Borough of Newtown will commemorate its bicentennial with an Evening of Celebration on Thursday, May 16, beginning at 6:30 pm, at Marygold’s on Main, 19 Main Street.

The celebration of the Borough’s 200th anniversary is the culmination of a two-year planning endeavor spearheaded by Burgesses Sarah Phillips and Maureen Crick Owen, and Borough residents Kath Gardner, Stephanie Gaston, Betsy Kenyon, Jessica Ragusa, and Daina Smith.

The public is invited to join Borough officials, residents and friends to mark the milestone.

Tickets are $75 and are available at newtownborough200.org.

The evening will include cocktails, passed hors d’oeuvres, and shared memories of the unique local government. Guest speakers will include members of The Mary Hawley Society and Bronson Hawley, a descendent of Newtown Benefactress Mary Hawley and a member of The Society of the Hawley Family.

Honored guests will also include longtime Borough supporters Doug Nelson, John Madzula, Donald Studley, and Betsy Kenyon.

The Borough of Newtown occupies about 1,252 acres, or roughly two square miles, in the central part of town. It was incorporated in 1824 by an act of the Connecticut General Assembly and is one of only nine remaining boroughs in the state.
