Business name: Sugar Magnolia Bakeshop

Address: 266 South Main Street

Owners: Stephanie Auerbach and Connie Viviani-Auerbach

Business background: Stephanie: Connie and I are both from Long Island. We met in culinary school the first day we were moving into the dorms. We’ve been together 13 years now, married for five years. When my parents were trying to retire, they got a house in Woodbury, where we’ve lived since January. Their realtor mentioned this space in Plaza South was up for sale, since Connie and I are both restaurant chefs — her having worked as a pastry chef in Fire Island and me having worked in Manhattan.

Connie: We went through the commuter life and wanted to work together at our own pace. We started making scones and donuts wholesale in Long Island to different companies under the name Sugar Magnolia Bakeshop. Things went so well that we decided to expend the menu and open a storefront.

Stephanie: We officially opened on February 4. After suffering the loss of our dog and our father within a month of opening, we are even more determined to make this dream a success in honor of them. My dad was the one that really pushed us to start the shop. Also, we named the business after a Grateful Dead song, because music is really important in our lives.

Business focus: Connie: We make fresh scones, donuts, cupcakes, brownies, and small pastries. We bake everything in-house, except the cannoli shells, but even the cannolis are filled to order. I also do custom cakes by order — from a small 6-inch up to a 12-inch half-sheet cake for parties. We are not gluten-free or peanut-free, but we do have options to accommodate dietary needs.

Stephanie: We also have a specific coffee roast we use out of New York and do lattes. We really love coffee and take pride in our espresso drinks.

Important to know: Connie: We like to call ourselves a “bakeshop” because it’s a mixture of a bakery and a coffee shop. We have free Wi-Fi.

Stephanie: It’s a mix of what we love to do — we love to bake, but we also like to sit in coffee shops for hours.

Connie: We also bake in very small batches, so we really have no waste. We’re being environmentally conscious.

Future events: Connie: We are doing the Newtown Municipal Center’s spotlight and will have a booth there with coupons people can pick up. We’ll have that there from April 15 through 26.

Hours: Tuesday through Friday from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm, Saturday from 8 am to 6 pm, Sunday from 9 am to 3:30 pm, and closed Monday.
