NHS Sluggers Earn Wins

Newtown High School’s baseball team blanked host Brookfield 3-0 on April 23, then doubled up visiting Bunnell of Stratford 4-2, at Fairfield Hills on April 27 before posting a 5-2 win at Immaculate of Danbury the next day.

In the win at Brookfield, the Nighthawks scored all of their runs in the top of the seventh inning. They mustered only four hits; the Bobcats committed five errors. Nick Lotrecchiano had a hit and a run batted in, and Jaret DeVellis drove in a run.

Jason Hebner pitched four innings of four-hit ball; he struck out two batters and walked a pair. Andrew Ross allowed five hits in three shutout innings, walking one and striking out two along the way.

Against Bunnell, Sam Czel had a double, two RBI, and a run scored; DeVellis had two hits and a run batted in; Michael Parker contributed a hit and an RBI, and a run scored; and Charlie Huegi and Jake Oliger both had hits and scored runs.

On the mound, Parker allowed two runs on seven hits, and fanned seven batters in a seven-inning complete game. Newtown’s defense sparkled, highlighted by a diving play turned in by Jack Procaccini on a ball hit up the middle.

In the win over Immaculate, Connor Miller threw a complete game, allowing five hits and compiling six strikeouts. Czel contributed a double and a run scored; Julian Dunn had two hits including triple and two runs; Oliger had a hit and two RBI; and David Matthews drove in two runs.

Newtown took its three-game winning streak and 6-3 overall mark into Weston on Wednesday, April 29. The Nighthawks return home for three straight games; Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport visits for a 4:15 pm first pitch on Friday, May 1 and Joel Barlow of Redding comes to town for a makeup game at 3:45 pm on Tuesday, May 5 (both at the high school); and Stratford and NHS will battle at Fairfield Hills on Wednesday, May 6, beginning at 6:30 pm.
