Postal Carriers’ Food Drive Is Saturday

“We need everything but pasta,” said Social Services Director Ann Piccini. Running down a list of items needed in the food pantry, she said nonperishables of any other variety are welcome.

This Saturday, every resident has the opportunity to lend a hand to filling food pantry shelves by leaving items for pickup by Newtown’s postal carriers and volunteers. Leave items in a bag near the mailbox Saturday, said postal employee Rich Crowther. Or, drop off items Saturday at the post office on Commerce Road, or call Ms Piccini’s office at 203-270-4330.

The 18th annual National Association of Letter Carriers’ National Food Drive to “Stamp Out Hunger” is the largest one-day food drive in the nation. The drive is held annually on the second Saturday in May in more than 10,000 cities and towns in all 50 states.

Ms Piccini said this week, “Prior to the postal drive we would often have empty shelves in the summer. This keeps us afloat.”
