UC IRVINE EXTENSION EXPANDS PROGRAM, ADDING TWO NEW APPRAISAL COURSES

AVV 2-26 #689976

ORANGE, CALIF. — UC Irvine Extension is expanding its certificate program in appraisal studies in fine and decorative arts curriculum to include two new courses.

The back-to-back accelerated courses, Inspecting and Describing Fine Art and Understanding Antique Furniture will be offered June 7–8 and June 9–10 as part of the fourth annual UC Irvine Extension Summer Institute of Connoisseurship in Fine and Decorative Arts. The program is designed for both novice and experienced appraisers.

“Both of these new courses are extremely hands-on, which is a hallmark of this program. In the age of ‘Antique Roadshow,’ we’re finding increased interest in exploring how things are inspected and appraised, and how to understand the materials being used,” explains Kirwan Rockefeller, director of UC Irvine Extension’s Arts & Humanities Program. The school has a five-year-long partnership with the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) and senior association members teach the courses.

The “Inspecting and Describing Fine Art” elective course was developed to teach students how to inspect and accurately measure paintings, sculpture and works on paper. Students will also learn ways of assessing and accurately describing the condition of these pieces.

In Understanding Antique Furniture, students are instructed on how to distinguish antique furniture from post-industrial revivals and copies, as well as how to recognize variations in materials, style, craftsman’s techniques and tools.

Both courses will be offered at the UCI Learning Center from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. To enroll, www.extension.uci.edu or 949-824-5414.
