STAMFORD – The 2001 season came to an end for the Newtown High School softball team Tuesday when it dropped a 5-0 first-round state tournament decision to Westhill in Stamford.

The loss left the Nighthawks with an overall record of 11-10 and ended the high school playing careers of seniors Kate Bouteiller, Laura Howard and Amanda Marsilio.

Newtown entered the game as the 20th-ranked team in the CIAC Class LL tourney, while Westhill, playing out of the FCIAC, was ranked 13th. A total of 33 teams began play in the tournament this week.

Westhill pitcher Stephanie Kelly pitched a near perfect game, facing the minimum 21 batters over seven innings.

Newtown’s only base runner was Trina Ramsdell who walked in the fourth inning only to be thrown out at second base moments later.

Westhill had advanced to last week’s FCIAC finals where it lost 1-0 to St Joseph of Trumbull.

Earlier this week, third-year coach Paul LaFrancesca announced his resignation at the end of the season, citing scheduling conflicts with a new job.
