Several Connecticut state park beaches have been closed by the CT Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) for Tuesday, June 7, due to high bacteria levels.

The swimming areas and beaches in five state parks are not open because of elevated bacteria levels from storm-water runoff from Sunday's heavy rain.

The following beaches are closed:

*Chatfield Hollow State Park in Killingworth;

*Indian Well State Park in Shelton;

*Kettletown State Park in Southbury;

*Wadsworth Falls State Park in Middlefield; and

*Wharton Brook State Park in Wallingford.

All four of the state's shortline locations - Hammonasset in Madison, Rocky Neck in Niantic, Sherwood Island in Westport and Silver Sands in Milford - remain open as of 11:30 Tuesday morning.

DEEP says they collect samples weekly to be analyzed by the Department of Public Health Lab for the presence of bacteria. The five parks that are closed will have their water levels resampled today, according to the online State Swimming Area Water Quality Report.

For additional information, visit ct.gov/DEEP or call the DEEP Water Quality Information Line, toll-free, at 866-CTPARKS (866-287-2757).

Municipal beaches are not included in the DEEP listing. Local health departments conduct water quality monitoring and testing at municipal swim areas.

Newtown Parks & Rec make announcements when Eichler's Cove and/or Treadwell Park pool need to be closed for any reason.
