Newtown Congregational Church will host an interfaith vigil tonight to honor those who were killed during the early morning hours of Sunday, June 12, at a nightclub in Orlando, Fla.

The public is invited to join leaders and representatives from Newtown's houses of worship at 7 pm Monday at Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street.

The vigil is being held in response to the shooting deaths of 49 people at Pulse Orlando, a gay nightclub, where a gunman opened fire early Sunday morning. Another 50-plus people were injured in the country's latest mass shooting.

President Barack Obama has ordered all American flags to be lowered to half-staff, also to honor those killed Sunday morning. Hook & Ladder firefighters have made two attempts to lower the Main Street flag - the first shortly after 5 pm Sunday, and the second at 8:45 Monday morning - but high winds have prevented the first responders from being able to fully lower the 20- by 30-foot flag currently on the pole. Hook & Ladder Chief Ray Corbo told The Newtown Bee Monday morning that firefighters will try again.
