FOR 7/25 STUDIO MUSEUM HARLEM PRESENTS COLLECTION IN CONTEXT

AVV/cd set 7/15 #745496

NEW YORK CITY — The Studio Museum in Harlem presents the latest exhibition of works from the museum’s permanent collection, “Collection in Context: Four Decades,” on view till October 26.

Reflecting on the museum’s collecting practices since it was established 40 years ago, this exhibition examines how this repository of black art has developed over time and how it has influenced the fields of American art, contemporary art and art by black artists across the globe.

The ongoing “Collection in Context” series provides an opportunity to study black cultural production in America and worldwide. Organized in thematic clusters — Early Years, Recent Acquisitions, Global Exchanges and Text and Narrativity — “Four Decades” loosely chronicles the formation and continuous development of the museum’s permanent collection, with special attention to the variety of ways in which it has grown.

This exhibition showcases the critical role the permanent collection has played in the museum’s commitment to the presenting of works by black artists at different points in their careers, and will highlight key moments in black cultural history, including the Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts Movement, as well as artists and work that do not fit easily into historical or aesthetic categories.

Organized collaboratively by the curatorial department, “Four Decades” presents work in a variety of media, including sculpture, drawing, prints and photography.

The museum is at 144 West 125th Street. For information, www.studiomuseum.org or 212-864-4500.
