Nestled in a shady spot between the playground and swing sets is a new addition to the adventures children will find at Dickinson Park.

Due to the efforts of Fran Tyluki and Cathy Mazzariello, “Madalyn Henry’s Little Free Library,” according to the plaque, now awaits young hands to open its framed glass doors, where books rest on the shelves. The small plaque also reads: “Take a book, return a book.” The two women wanted to establish the library, a free-standing cupboard with shelves and a roof, in memory of a “dear friend that had recently passed away,” according to Parks and Recreation Commission meeting minutes from early May. Presenting their library idea to the commission, Ms Tyluki stated that her friend was a fellow book club member and had a great passion for books and a love for reading to children.”

The women had proposed in May to build, install, and maintain the little free library, which they hoped to place near the playground this summer. The “entire commission had expressed favorable interest,” the minutes state. “The commission was in full support.”

On Wednesday morning, August 15, parents walked with children along the playground paths; children climbed ramps and rushed toward slides and ladders, while at the center of activity was the library.

Also written on the library plaque is the website, littlefreelibrary.org. The site states, “building community, sparking creativity, inspiring readers.”

On the library shelves is a small collection of children’s books.

Recreation Director Amy Mangold said, “It’s been amazing to see how well this works, totally organically. Some people take and leave books, some just take, some just leave.” She plans to put a small notebook and pen in the box. “I hear notes in little libraries are very popular and rewarding. This was a special idea brought forward by Fran and Cathy, and we are honored to host this project in honor of Madalyn Henry.”

A small free library — just two shelves and enough to hold a small collection of children’s books — now stands in Dickinson Park next to the central playground. A plaque reads, “Madalyn Henry’s littlefreelibrary.org. Take A Book, Return A Book.” In the spring, Fran Tyluki and Cathy Mazzariello had proposed the idea to the Parks and Recreation Commission in memory of their friend. —Bee Photo, Bobowick
