Museum To Host Free Postal Train Exhibit

DANBURY — The Celebrate the Century Express, a specially outfitted four-car Amtrak train, will make its only New England stop when it arrives on September 8 for a three-day exhibition at the Danbury Railway Museum.

The train will be open for public tours of its multimedia exhibits and historic displays. The CTC Express includes a colorfully painted Amtrak diesel locomotive that pulls a restored vintage Railway Post Car, a stamp exhibit car, a classic business car, and a baggage car. Admission to the exhibits is free and the Danbury Railway Museum has waived its normal museum entrance fees for the weekend.

The event is part of a historic, 18-month train tour across America highlighting the Celebrate the Century program, a national stamp selection and issuance series honoring some of the most memorable and significant people, places, events, and trends of each decade of the 20th century. Last year the CTC Express traveled over 13,000 miles of track, visiting 36 cities in 18 states and more than 150,000 people, including thousands of schoolchildren.

A welcoming ceremony will take place on Saturday, September 9, at 11 am, and will include remarks from US Rep James Maloney, Danbury Mayor Gene Eriquez, Thomas McCullough of the Danbury Railway Museum, Danbury Postmaster Michael Kaylor, and Fred MacDonald, president of the Mobile Post Office Society.

The tour hours are Friday, September 8, from 2 to 7 pm; Saturday, from 10 am to 7 pm; and Sunday, from 11 am to 6 pm. For more information about the museum, visit www.danbury.org/drm or call 778-8337.
