Yankee Discount’s Dog Days Donation

By Jan Howard

Jodi Bialik of Canine Advocates of Newtown this week accepted checks from Yankee Discount Wine & Liquors proprietor Bob Schnut to benefit the dogs at the Newtown Dog Pound.

The fundraiser, which ran from June through August at the shop on Queen Street, netted a total of $448.11, which included a check for $149.37 in donations from the public and a check for $298.74 from Mr Schnut, $2 for every dollar donated by the public.

“We are very, very grateful,” Ms Bialik said, “and extremely grateful for the generosity of Yankee Discount Wine & Liquors.”

The funds raised through the shop’s wishing well campaign will be used toward spaying/neutering of pound dogs prior to adoption, flyers, the Canine Advocates new Web site, and various public awareness campaigns to bring about quicker adoptions of the dogs, Ms Bialik said.

“A lot of customers saw the first article [about the fundraiser] and were very generous,” Mr Schnut said. “Kids would throw in change, and adults one and five-dollar bills.

“One woman came in only to put $5 in the basket,” he noted. “The public has been enormously helpful.”

Mr Schnut’s interest in the dogs at the pound started with posting adopt-a-dog posters.
