Business background: Most of my life has been spent in the food industry, where I have worked almost steadily since I was 15. I went to culinary school while working at the Watertown Meat Center, and I bought the store when I was 24 and continued there for another decade. I also worked in a liquor store learning that segment of the industry and as a representative for Buzzuto’s, a large regional wholesale grocery supplier, where I managed 92 separate client accounts, helping them in prepared foods, their deli and bakery areas, and doing everything from merchandising to creating new recipes. But I’m using my culinary training and adjusting to cooking for the masses here at The Local Gourmet.
Business focus: I started thinking about opening this company last year and began looking for a location when we literally stumbled on this space, and I fell in love with it. After redesigning it, the space turned out just as I had envisioned. Customers can come in and select from a huge variety of prepared foods, which we source locally wherever possible. We cook everything here. We also have a real New York-style deli here with prepared foods and salads to grab and go, or we can prepare it for you. We even make all our salad dressings from scratch. Every day, I prepare and fully cook a full assortment of prepared items ready to pop into your oven to reheat and eat. We try and keep a few staple items that are most popular with customers, as well as new items that we rotate in and out, so what you see today, you may not see tomorrow. We have large and small portions, side dishes, baked products, beverages, and desserts, including four different local ice creams. And as fall arrives, we’ll be starting with hot soups. Once winter comes, we’re looking at doing some in-store events as well. We offer cold catering now and will expand into hot catering by September.
