Just three more months of the Sunday Cinema Series remain, with special plans for the 75th anniversary screening of Gone with the Wind at 1 pm on November 30 at Edmond Town Hall.

Those who decide to wear their Oscar best may strut the red carpet before the show. Tickets for the November screening will be $8 for adults, $5 seniors and students.

Online registration for premier seating is requested, and can be done at .bit.ly/GWTWnewtown

In addition, organizers are looking for “celebrities” to participate in the festivities.  Are you a Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Jimmy Stewart or Bette Davis look-alike?  Email coordinator Jen Rogers at SundayCinemaSeries@gmail.com to be included in the red carpet planning.

Meanwhile, three courses of classic horror films will be served up on Sunday, October 19. First, 1939 Best Picture nominee The Hunchback of Notre Dame will be shown at 1 and 4 pm.

Then at 7 pm, a double feature of The Return of Doctor X and Son of Frankenstein will be offered.

Matinee tickets are $2 and the double feature is $4.  As a special bonus treat for the 7 pm shows, A Really Bright Star, a short film by NHS student and emerging filmmaker Max Galassi, will have its premier just before the double feature presentation.

Two of this month’s include some of the most recognizable monsters from the genre. The Hunchback of Notre Dame was a remake of the original 1923 silent film, which starred Lon Chaney, though Charles Laughton’s Quasimodo may be even more memorable.

With an expert cast, impressive set, and a script adapted from the Victor Hugo novel, an opera-scale story was created that is both horrifying and poignant.  When this film was first released, New York Times critic Frank S. Nugent opined that this film was “almost unrelievedly brutal,” though today’s audience can judge for itself.

Boris Karloff’s portrayal of Frankenstein’s creature is one of the most iconic movie monsters of all time, and in Son of Frankenstein, he plays opposite Bela Lugosi (best known for his Dracula) as Ygor and Basil Rathbone as Baron Frankenstein.

The Return of Doctor X, though not a true sequel, was selected to accompany Son of Frankenstein because the role of the sinister Doctor X was a huge departure for Humphrey Bogart, and consequently was his first and last horror flick.

All films will be shown at the Edmond Town Hall Theater, 45 Main Street in Newtown. All proceeds and donations will benefit the Edmond Town Hall for theater improvements.
