Guy Wire Incident

At about 2:18 pm on October 4, motorist Nelson Bassette, 46, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2002 Toyota Camry sedan southward on South Main Street, near its northerly intersection with Elm Drive, turned to the right in order to avoid colliding with a noncontact vehicle that was traveling in front of him, police said.

In making the right turn, however, the Toyota struck a stabilizing guy wire for a utility pole positioned along the roadway, damaging the guy wire, police said. There were no injuries.

Police informed Frontier Communications that its guy wire had been damaged. Police said they issued Bassette an infraction for making a restricted turn.

Botsford Rear-Ender

Police report a two-vehicle accident that involved Botsford Fire Rescue's command car, which is a 2016 Ford Explorer SUV owned by that volunteer fire company, at about 5:51 pm on October 4.

Police said that the Ford, which was driven by Botsford Fire Chief Wayne Ciaccia, 56, of Newtown, was southbound on South Main Street and then stopped behind a stopped noncontact vehicle, which was waiting at a red traffic signal located at the northern driveway for Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street.

A southbound 2017 Chevrolet Volt sedan, which was driven by Christopher Carver, 48, of Middlebury, then stopped behind the Ford, according to police. When the traffic signal turned green, the Chevrolet drove forward, striking the rear end of the Ford, police said. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Carver a written warning for traveling an unreasonable distance apart.

Point O'Rocks Mishap

Police report a mishap on land at Point O'Rocks Road on the afternoon of October 5. That dirt road links Deep Brook Road to Boggs Hill Road. Police said a witness described to them what had occurred.

Glenn Morris, 71, of Danbury, who was driving a 2012 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, was gathering some wood on private property. Morris then started backing up the Toyota, while holding its driver's door open, police said. The truck, however, struck some object, which jarred the vehicle, resulting in Morris partially falling out of the Toyota, police said.

With his right leg trapped inside the truck, the vehicle moved backward for about 25 feet before stopping, dragging Morris while it was moving, police said.

Morris was injured and was transported to the hospital for treatment, police said.

I-84 DUI

State police said they stopped motorist Richard Johnsen, 53, of Woodbury, about 2 am on October 6 on eastbound Interstate 84, near Exit 11, to investigate.

State police charged Johnsen with driving under the influence and with failure to drive in the proper lane. Following arrest processing, state police released Johnsen on $500 nonsurety bail for a November 8 court appearance.

Probation Arrest

Police report that at about 9:15 am on October 6, they went to the home of Michael Maddox, 46, of Sandy Hook, with state probation officers and charged Maddox on a warrant with violation of probation. Police said they then transported Maddox to state Superior Court in Danbury that day for arraignment on the charge.

Maddox pleaded not guilty. A judge released then him for an October 20 court appearance.

The violation of probation charge stems from an original incident on March 28, 2015, police said. In that 2015 incident, Maddox, who was driving a 2009 Cadillac Escalade SUV, struck the rear end of a 2005 Honda Civic on southbound Main Street, near the flagpole intersection, and then drove away from the accident. Police later found Maddox and lodged multiple charges against him, including evading responsibility, to which he later pleaded guilty in court.

Multiple Charges

On October 6 at about 9:43 am, Newtown officers responded to the intersection of Deerfield Drive and Toddy Hill Road after a report of an individual sleeping behind the wheel of a black Volkswagen sedan.

Upon arrival, they discovered Anthony P. Gerardi, 27, of Danbury in the vehicle who was in possession of heroin, marijuana, a prescribed medication pill, and a glass pipe either on his person or in the vehicle.

Gerardi was transported to headquarters, processed, and charged with DUI, operating under suspension, two counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana. He posted a $100 cash bond pending an October 20 court date.

Berkshire DUI Arrest

Police said that at about 8:18 pm on October 6, they received a report concerning an erratically driven vehicle traveling westward on Berkshire Road, near Great Ring Road. Police said that the caller told them that the erratically driven vehicle had struck a stone wall, after which it continued onward, swerving on the road and off the road.

Police said they found the vehicle in question on Berkshire Road near Toddy Hill Road and pulled over motorist Bryan Mohrmann, 35, of Beacon Falls to investigate.

Police arrested Mohrmann on charges of driving under the influence, failure to drive in the proper lane, interfering with police, and driving with a suspended license. After Mohrmann's arrest processing was complete, police released him on $1,500 bail for an arraignment on the charges on October 20 in state Superior Court in Danbury.

Off The Road

Motorist Dennis Miller, 65, of North Salem, N.Y., who was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV eastward on Berkshire Road about 8:07 am on October 7, attempted to make a right turn onto Great Ring Road, but he turned wide, went off the left side of the street and then struck a stone wall, police report.

There were no injuries. Miller received a written warning for making an improper turn, police said.

Flagpole Crash

Police said that motorist Jonathan Lima, 26, of Bridgeport was driving a 2011 Nissan Rogue SUV westward on Church Hill Road at about 3:34 pm on October 7 and then stopped at a stop sign at the Main Street flagpole intersection.

Lima then attempted to turn left from westbound Church Hill Road to enter southbound Main Street, but the Nissan drove into the flagpole, police said. Lima said that sun glare compromised his vision in attempting to make the turn, police report.

There were no injuries. Lima was verbally warned for making an improper turn, police said.

Prospect Drive Collision

Newtown Police responded to the area of Prospect Drive and South Main Street at about 6 pm on October 8 to investigate a minor collision.

Upon arrival they determined that Fernando D. Martins, 63, was operating a 2008 Mazda 6i on Prospect Drive when he stopped for a stop sign at the intersection of South Main Street. At that time a 2009 Toyota RAV4 SUV being operated southward on South Main Street by Elsa Esperanza Cambizaca-Loja, 49, of Danbury reportedly made a left turn into Prospect Drive, striking the front end of the Mazda.

Both vehicles sustained front end bumper damage; the Toyota was towed from the scene. No injuries were reported.

Cambizaca-Loja was issued an infraction for failure to keep right at an intersection.

High Rock DUI

At about 7:34 pm on October 8, motorist Russell Cook, 44, of Sandy Hook, was driving a 2015 Nissan Rogue SUV eastward on New Lebbon Road, but then failed to obey a stop sign at that road's intersection with High Rock Road, police report.

Cook attempted to make a left turn onto High Rock Road, but the Nissan slid off that street's northbound road shoulder and then traveled down an embankment, police said. Cook was not injured, police said.

After investigating, police charged Cook with driving under the influence and with failure to obey a stop sign. Cook is scheduled to appear in court to answer the charges.

Car Into Guidewire

On October 9 at about 1 pm, State Police responded to a reported single vehicle crash on the Exit 10 on ramp to I-84 eastbound.

Upon investigation, they report that John Matthew Principi, 17, of Sandy Hook was operating a 2002 Honda Accord when he lost control on the wet roadway, struck a wire rope guiderail off the highway and shoulder. No injuries were reported, but the Honda was towed from the incident.

Principi was found at fault for traveling too fast for conditions.

Hawleyville Collision

Motorist Teresa Hegarty-White, 66, of Brookfield was driving a 2007 Buick LaCrosse sedan northward on Obtuse Road near Pond Brook Road in wet conditions about 5 pm on October 9, when while negotiating an uphill turn to the left, the Buick went out of control, slid and then struck some guard cabling and a utility pole, police said.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Hegarty-White to Danbury Hospital to be checked for pain, police said. The motorist was verbally warned for making a restricted turn, police said.

Evading Responsibility

At about 8:35 pm on October 9, a New York City man, who was driving a 2016 Mazda CX-5 SUV southward on Main Street, stopped in preparing to make a left turn onto Schoolhouse Hill Road, police said.

The Mazda was then struck from behind by a southbound older gray/silver Honda CRV SUV, police said. The Mazda driver was not injured. The Honda driver then drove southward on Main Street with heavy front damage to that vehicle, police said.

Police are investigating and ask anyone with knowledge of the collision to contact them at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203-426-5841.

Rear End Collision

On October 10 at about 2:13 pm, Keith Devere Gantt, 49, of Sandy Hook was operating a 2010 Nissan Armada on eastbound I-84 in the area of Exit 10 when he slowed for stop and go traffic in the area.

According to State Police, who responded, the Nissan was then struck from behind by a 2003 Nissan Altima being operated by Elizabeth Vargas-Bonilla, 42, of New York City. Minor damage occurred and no injuries were reported.

Vargas-Bonilla was issued an infraction for following too close.

Rear End Collision

Newtown Police responded to a reported minor collision on October 10 at about 5:47 pm on Wasserman Way in the area of the Exit 11 on ramp.

Upon investigation police say Erin Laurence Faurote, 22, of Brookfield had stopped his 2012 Subaru Impreza for the traffic light. When the light turned green, a 2010 Nissan Rogue SUV operated by Martha Y. Ramirez-Perez, 30, reportedly accelerated and struck the Subaru from behind. No injuries were reported.

Ramirez-Perez was issued a verbal warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Fender Bender

Newtown Police were called to the intersection of Mt Pleasant Road and Susan Lane at about 2:56 pm on October 11 to investigate a minor rear-end collision.

Upon investigation police reported that Romilton M. Sousa, 51, of Danbury was operating a 2012 Honda Civic LX westbound when he slowed for traffic behind a construction vehicle, when he was struck from behind by a 2000 Toyota Camry being operated by William MacDonald, 43, of Monroe. There were no reported injuries.

MacDonald was issued a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Main Street Crash

Police said that John Clark Andrews III, 45, of Newtown was driving a 2015 Chevrolet truck southward near 35 Main Street at about 5:07 pm on October 11, when a noncontact vehicle that was traveling in front of Andrews stopped suddenly, resulting in Andrews stopping suddenly.

Southbound motorist Cullen Merrifield, 22, of Sandy Hook, who was driving a 2005 Nissan Altima, then struck the rear end of the Chevrolet, police said.

There were no injuries. Police report they verbally warned Merrifield for following too closely.

Court Arrest

On October 13 at about 11 am, a State Trooper responded to Danbury Superior Court to serve an arrest warrant of Jonathan Blair, 25, who is currently incarcerated at Garner Correctional Institution, and who was transported for processing and arraignment in relation to incident at the prison on July 20.

At that time Blair was charged with Assault on a Corrections Officer and held on a $20,000 bond to appear the following day.

Impersonation Incident

Following the investigation of a reported altercation between two drivers on Mt Pleasant Road at about 1:35 pm on October 15, Newtown officers located and arrested John F. Davin, 71, of Newtown on charges of impersonation of a police officer.

Police say following the altercation, Davin produced a "law enforcement type badge," to the complainant.

He was processed and released on a $500 nonsurety bond pending a November 2 court date.

Mazda Rollover

Police, ambulance, and Hook & Ladder responders were called to the area of Echo Valley and Tamarack Roads around 4:08 pm on October 16 following a reported rollover collision.

Upon arrival police report that Jeanne Bessell, 37, of Bridgeport was operating a 2012 Mazda A5 with four additional passengers southbound on Echo Valley Road when the right front wheel assembly struck a bridge abutment at a narrowing area of the road. Police say the impact launched the vehicle into the air and caused it to roll over onto its roof, and ripping the right wheel assembly from the vehicle.

All occupants were able to get out of the car, and responders attended to two minor children who complained of injuries. One was treated at the scene and the other was transported to a local hospital after complaining of difficulty breathing.

The incident remains under investigation.

SUV Into Guardrail

Newtown Police were called to the area of Berkshire Road near the intersection of Oakview Road around 12:15 am on October 17 after a reported single vehicle collision.

Upon investigation officers report that Irving Freedman, 92, of Sandy Hook was traveling eastbound when he reportedly lost control of his 2013 GMC Terrain SUV on a curve, making contact with a guardrail. No injuries were reported.

Freedman was issued a verbal warning for making a restricted turn.
