As many have heard, another school shooting took place on October 21, this time at a middle school in Sparks, Nev. A 12-year old student wounded two fellow students and killed a teacher before taking his own life. The eighth grade math teacher, Michael Landsberry, was a former Marine and an Air National Guard Master Sergeant. He reportedly tried to shield students from the young shooter.

Newtown VFW Post 308 Commander James Rebman said the tragedy touched him personally because both he and Michael Landsberry held the same rank and had the same job when they served in Afghanistan.

Commander Rebman continued: “Most of all, he is the true meaning of courage and a hero. We only hope that we all would act in the same manner as he did.

“We, in Newtown, have been the recipients of the generous outpouring of other VFWs, organizations and individuals and we would like to do the same for the Landsberry family,” said Cmmdr Rebman.

With that, Newtown VFW Post 308 has set up an account for donations, which will be used to assist the Landsberry family as they deal with their tragic loss.

Mr Landsberry is survived by his wife, and two of her children from a previous relationship.

To make a donation, checks payable to Newtown VFW Post 308, with Michael Landsberry noted on the memo line, can be dropped off at the Newtown VFW Post. The post is located at the top of Freedom Defenders Way (formerly 18 Tinkerfield Road), off Wasserman Way just east of its intersection with South Main Street.
