NHS Boys’ Soccer, Field Hockey And Volleyball State Tourney Update

The Newtown High School boys’ soccer team rebounded from its SWC Tourney loss with a 3-0 upset of Ridgefield in the first round of the Class LL State Tournament on Tuesday afternoon. The Nighthawks, the tourney’s No. 21 seed, traveled to No. 12 Ridgefield and earned the shutout to advance to face another FCIAC team in the second round.  Newtown was scheduled to visit No. 5 Staples of Westport on Thursday (after The Bee went to press). The Hawks went 10-5-1 in the regular season.

The Newtown High field hockey team qualified for the Class L tourney as the No. 11 seed and lost a tough one to No. 6 South Windsor in the first round on Wednesday afternoon.Newtown fell 1-0 in penalty strokes following three overtimes. The NHS girls’ volleyball team, seeded ninth in Class LL, had a first round bye and was slated to face No. 8 Hartford Public on the road on Thursday.
