Newtown High School’s field hockey team, seeded 15th in the Class L bracket, blanked No. 18 Amity of Woodbridge 3-0 in a qualifying-round contest, under the lights at Blue & Gold Stadium, on November 9. The Nighthawks, 8-6-1-1 (wins, losses, ties, overtime losses) in the regular season, advanced to visit No. 2 Conard of West Hartford (15-1) in the first round, on November 11. Conard prevailed 3-0 to end Newtown's season.

In the win over Amity (6-8-2), the Nighthawks kept the pressure on before scoring late. After a scoreless first half, in which the Nighthawks generated eight of the game’s 11 penalty corners, Newtown capitalized on its first penalty corner attempt of the second half. Kayla DiSibio opened the scoring just 2:38 out of the halftime break Alison Kelleher and Shannon Lynch also had second-half goals.

Emily Dirga, Lynch, DiSibio, Emma Schmid-Tharni, Megan Kelleher, Alison Kelleher, and Megan Goyda all had scoring chances denied in the opening half as Amity goaltender Alexandrea Smith came up with bit saves to keep the game scoreless. At the other end of the field, Newtown’s Natalie Shaker was strong in the cage, and got help from Newtown’s solid defense, to keep the shutout intact.
