Newtown High School diver Kari Djonne was runner-up in the State Open diving championship, at Middletown High, on November 19. Djonne had a score of 488.20; Westhill/Stamford’s Rachel Burtson was first with a score of 534.75. Burston and Djonne also finished one-two in the Class LL state championships.

Newtown’s Gillian Eckwall was ninth in the State Open with a score of 393.80. There were two dozen divers representing the top performers from schools representing each of the state’s four class sizes.

The State Open championships continue with the swimming portion of the competition on Saturday, November 21, at Yale University in New Haven, beginning at noon. The Nighthawks will race against the top swimmers throughout the state in the season-ending meet.
