#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.

Celebrated in the United States on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the international event kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.

To be observed on November 27, this year’s event will again harness the collective power of individuals, communities, and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide.

As of November 21, the following Newtown and Sandy Hook nonprofits and schools had registered to participate in this year’s fundraising effort:

Another option is to visit givingtuesday.org, scroll to the bottom of the page, and click on Happening Near Me and then search for Newtown or Sandy Hook organizations.

Founded in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y, a community and cultural center in New York City, #GivingTuesday has inspired millions of people to give back and support the causes they believe in. More than $300 million was raised online to benefit a tremendously broad range of organizations, and much more was given in volunteer hours, donations of food and clothing, and acts of kindness.

Henry Timms, founder of #GivingTuesday and executive director of 92Y, said he and other organizers have been “incredibly inspired by the way the #GivingTuesday community has embraced this concept for a worldwide movement

“As we prepare for November 27, we’re energized and encouraged by the community’s generosity,” he added. “The levels of creativity, effort, and the quality of the new ideas people have contributed and shared are phenomenal.”
