Volunteer Opportunities At Railway Museum

DANBURY — Danbury Railway Museum has a number of openings for volunteers who would like to spend some time at the historic train station-turned-museum.

Openings are available for those interested in helping with fundraising, working in the museum’s gift shop and/or front desk, tour guides, car hosts, and helping with special events and shows (such as the museum’s tenth anniversary dinner coming in March, Easter Bunny Trains, RailFair 2004, and excursions).

There are also opportunities to help the museum with restoration and yardwork, committee work and various other positions.

Contact the museum at 778-8337 for details.

Danbury Railway Museum is a non-profit organization staffed solely by volunteers. The museum, located in the historic station and rail yard at 120 White Street in downtown Danbury, offers railroad history, rail excursion trips, a collection of original and restored rolling stock, and opportunities for hands-on railroad work at “12 inches to the foot” scale.

The goal of Danbury Railway Museum, Inc., is to create and manage a railway museum which educates the public about the vital role railroads and railroaders have played in North America from their inception in the early 19th Century to their evolving function today.

In achieving its goals, the museum takes full advantage of Danbury’s unique rail facilities, the old Danbury rail yard and station. The museum’s ever growing collection of rolling stock and railroad items includes many one-of-a-kind pieces such as the New Haven RR Mack FCD railbus and a fully operating turntable.

Operating hours for the museum building and railway yard are, from January through March, Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, and Sunday from noon to 4 pm. April through December the museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, Sunday from noon to 5 pm. The museum has special hours on certain holidays; call for details.
