Offer Strategies For Keeping Our Schools Safe

DANBURY — “Keeping Our Schools Safe: Preventing, Identifying and Managing Aggressive and At-Risk Behaviors In The School” is the topic of an upcoming workshop co-sponsored by Danbury Hospital and the Connecticut State Department of Education. The all-day program will take place on Friday, January 14 (snow date: January 21) from 8:30 am to 4 pm in the John C. Creasy Center for Health Education auditorium at Danbury Hospital, 24 Hospital Avenue.

A panel of experts will address the challenges and concerns related to the emerging issues on student threats, aggressive and other at-risk behaviors as well as appropriate strategies for handling them.

A discussion regarding school climate, law enforcement involvement, policy inclusion, constructive administration/disciplinary action, support for the threatening student, the role and impact of the media and actual case studies also will be presented.

The workshop is targeted to school administrators, board of education members, school support staff, resource officers, faculty, PTO and PTA members and students.

“Keeping Our Schools Safe” workshop presenters and panelists include Nancy Pugliese, JD, Connecticut Department of Education, Drug Free Schools; Elizabeth Driscoll Jorgensen, CDAD, coordinator of adolescent substance abuse and student assistance services, Danbury Hospital Center for Child and Adolescent Treatment Services; Dr Steven Edwards, high school principal; Judy Blanchard, Newtown Public Schools; Rich Mills, attorney, specializing in school law and policy; and Diane Samples, media consultant.

Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Fee for the workshop is $15, which includes refreshments and workshop materials. Continuing education credits also will be offered. Parking is free in blue visitor’s parking lot, Hospital Avenue entrance.
