It may be early in the season, but the Danbury Holiday Wrestling Tournament had a postseason feel as some of the state’s best teams tangled on the mats on December 27. Newtown High, defending Class LL state champion, came out on top in the event which included last year’s Class L champion New Milford, as well as the State Open winners, the tournament hosts from Danbury High.

Luca Crudo (113 pound division), Anthony Falbo (170), Joe Accousti (152), and Andy Hubina (195) all won weight division championships to help the Nighthawks capture the team title.

The NHS grapplers defeated host Bristol Eastern 42-27 on December 23. Newtown’s winners were as follows: 106. Tom Leuci won via pin in 1:22, 113. Luca Crudo won via pin in 2:28, 126. Ed Lovely earned a 9-5 decision, 132. Matt Gonzalez earned a 7-0 decision, 152. Joe Accousti won via pin in 1:07, 195. Andy Hubina won via pin in 5:22, 220. Tom Long won via pin in 3:34, 170. Anthony Falbo won via forfeit.

After competing in the Trumbull Duals, beginning at 10 am on January 3, the Nighthawks will have their first home meet of the season when Masuk of Monroe visits for a 7 pm start on Wednesday, January 7.

Luca Crudo competes during Newtown's win in the Ludlowe Invitational on December 20. Crudo and the Nighthawks went on to defeat Bristol Eastern on December 23, before capturing the championship in the Danbury Holiday Tournament four days later.
