High Winds Cut Electric Power In Scattered Outages

During the high winds that hit the area on Tuesday, 195 Newtown customers of the Connecticut Light & Power Company (CL&P) lost their electric service, largely due to trees and tree limbs falling onto electric lines and cutting power to users.

There are about 11,000 CL&P customers in Newtown.

Statewide, about 26,000 CL&P electric customers lost their electricity, said CL&P spokesman David Radanovich. The hardest hit area was Torrington/Falls Village.

Initial electric outages occurred in Newtown between 11 am and noon, when nine CL&P customers lost their electricity. The number of local outages peaked between 1 and 2 pm, when there were 195 customers with no power. After 3 pm, only about seven customers were without electricity. Electric service was fully restored by 9:30 pm, Mr Radanovich said.

Volunteer firefighters responded for four reports of fallen electric lines during Tuesday with fire crews traveling to Flat Swamp Road, Lakeview Terrace, Shepaug Road, and Berkshire Road. (See Fire Reports for details.)
