On Display At Danbury Mayor’s Office

By Eliza Hallabeck

The photography of four Newtown High School students is currently on display at Danbury’s City Hall, in the office of Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton.

The students — Nicolette Waterhouse, Eric Hoffman, Kateleen Foy and Haley Russo — all studied through an internship program with Brookfield-based photographer Laurie Klein.

Ms Klein yearly helps students further their photographic endeavors by helping them as a mentor. This year 12 area students worked with her during the program.

The works of all 12 students, including the four NHS students, are now on display on the third floor of the Danbury Mayor’s office at 122 Deer Hill Avenue.

The opening reception for the photography exhibit, called “It Works,” was held on Thursday, December 17. The exhibit will be on display during business hours until January 7.

The full list of students who have work on display in the exhibit are Arthur Hauser and Matt Valenti from Bethel High School; Christina D’Arco, Danica Caroll and Mike Rupp, from Brookfield High School; Katie Kelly, from Wooster School in Danbury; and the four NHS students.

“It went great,” said NHS senior Eric Hoffman, who said roughly 200 people stopped by to look at the students’ work during the openind reception. “It was fun.

“Generally everyone was impressed with everyone’s work,” he added.

Eric uses a 10.5 millimeter fish eye lens to shoot his photos of skateboard action shots. He said he also enjoys photographing landscapes.

A friend introduced Eric to photography, and the high schooler said he spent a summer saving money from his job bussing tables at Bistro 52 at The Spinning Wheel Inn in Redding for both a camera and a lens.

Eric has been practicing photography for about a year and a half, he said.

“It’s a good way to express your likes,” he said, “and you can basically do whatever  you want with it.”

Eric is looking into studying either photography or graphic design in college.

Haley Russo, Kateleen Foy and Nicolette Waterhouse were unavailable for comment.
