Antler Prank

Police are holding for safekeeping seven sets of wooden antlers, which pranksters apparently stole from holiday lawn ornaments, and then threw onto a Jo-Mar Drive property in Sandy Hook.

Police learned of the crime on the morning of December 22. The owner of the stolen items should contact police Sergeant Darlene Froehlich at the police station, telephone 426-5841, to claim the wooden antlers.

Dodge Damaged

Sometime between December 19 and 21, someone threw rocks at a 1996 Dodge Stratus that was parked at the Rocky Glen Mill office building at 75 Glen Road in Sandy Hook. The thrown rocks damaged the auto’s front and rear windshields, causing an estimated $1,200 in property damage.

Police ask anyone with information on the vandalism to contact them.

Treadwell Vandalism

Police report a case of burglary and vandalism at Treadwell Park, the town park on Philo Curtis Road in Sandy Hook.

Sometime between 7 am December 20 and 7 am December 22, someone entered the supply room in the park’s poolhouse next to swimming pool, and took several bottles of paint that are used for arts and crafts projects, police said.

The thief used the paint to deface the patio and picnic tables at the nearby park pavilion, police said. There was no forced entry into the building, police said.

Police ask the public for help in solving the crime.

Hyundai Hits Dog

While driving a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon coupe northward on Botsford Hill Road, near its intersection with High Bridge Road, on the morning of December 21, motorist Sharon Saucier, 47, of Fairfield, encountered a small brown dog, which had run out onto the road in front of the auto, police said.

Saucier attempted to avoid striking the animal, but collided with it, police said. The dog’s owner, who lives on High Bridge Road, transported the injured animal to a veterinarian for medical treatment, police said. Saucier was not injured.

 

Kia Vs Deer

Motorist Laura Tremblay, 45, of Milford was driving a 2000 Kia Sephia sedan northward on South Main Street near 176 South Main Street at about 7:30 pm December 19, when the auto collided with a deer that had entered the road, police said.

Tremblay was not injured, police said.

Riverside Road DUI

Police report they stopped a vehicle driven by Thomas Unwin, 41, of Brookfield on Riverside Road at about 1:30 am December 28 as part of a criminal investigation. Police said they gave Unwin field sobriety tests, which he failed, after which they charged him with driving under the influence.

After processing his arrest, police released Unwin on a $10 bond for a January 14 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Mile Hill DUI

Police said they saw motorist Shane Magoon, 22, of South Easton, Mass,, driving over the road’s centerline on Mile Hill Road at about 2:40 am on December 28.

Police said they then stopped Magoon and gave him field sobriety tests, which he failed. After processing his arrest on charges of driving under the influence and failure to drive to the right, police released Magoon on a $300 bond for a January 14 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Drug Charges

At about 11:30 pm December 26, police stopped motorist Douglas Calderone, 17, of 43 Horseshoe Ridge Road as he was departing from the Newtown Convenience Store parking lot at 22 Church Hill Road for driving with a cracked windshield.

Police said that on investigating, they charged Calderone with driving with an obstructed windshield, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police released Calderone on a promise to appear January 13 in Danbury Superior Court.

Post Office

Police report that they received for safekeeping on December 19 a set of keys that were found in the parking lot of the main post office on Commerce Road. The owner may claim the keys at the police station.

Motor Vehicle Charges

On the night of December 27, motorist Matt Gilmartin, 45, of 13 Baldwin Road failed to stop for a red traffic signal at the intersection of Church Hill Road and Queen Street, so police stopped him.

Police said that on investigating, they learned that they held a warrant for Gilmartin’s arrest on a charge of second degree failure to appear in court, driving under suspension, and failure to wear a seatbelt.

Police served that warrant against Gilmartin, in which the motor vehicle charges stem from a May 27 incident. Police released Gilmartin on a $500 bond for a January 14 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Shot Window

Police learned on December 24 that someone had shot out the front driver’s side window of a vehicle that was parked near the road on Poorhouse Road in Dodgingtown. Police said the vandal apparently used a pellet gun in the doing the damage, which occurred sometime between 7:45 pm December 23 and 12:30 am December 24. The vehicle was unoccupied when the incident occurred.

Police are investigating the case of second degree criminal mischief and ask anyone with information on the matter to contact them at 426-5841.

South Main Collision

Police report a two-vehicle accident on northbound South Main Street about noon December 23.

Motorist John F. Ogrinc, 51, of Monroe, who was driving a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta, slowed for traffic and was struck from behind by motorist Wendy Henion-Schoeller, 27, of 5 Vining Road, who was driving a 1996 Ford Explorer, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Henion-Schoeller an infraction ticket for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart. They also issued her a written warning for a vehicular violation.

Boggs Hill Crash

Motorist Dawn Swendsen, 55, of 42 Mt Nebo Road, who was driving a 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse convertible northward on Boggs Hill Road at about 2 am December 25, fell asleep at the wheel after working long hours and crossed the road’s centerline, went off the southbound road shoulder and then struck a utility pole, police said.

Police said Swendsen was not injured in the accident. Police said they took no enforcement action.

 

Sandy Hook Center

Police report a two-vehicle accident in Sandy Hook Center about 1 pm December 24. Motorist Michael Resch, 18, of Wilton, who was driving a 1999 Dodge Caravan, turned left from Washington Avenue onto Church Hill Road and then stopped for a vehicle in front of him, which was making a left turn, police said.

Motorist Chris Malloy, 18, of 36 Taunton Hill Road, who was driving a 1997 Jeep Cherokee, then struck the rear end of the Dodge, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Malloy a written warning for traveling at an unsafe distance.

Multiple Vehicles

A three-vehicle accident occurred on the Exit 11 exit ramp of Interstate 84 about 8 am December 19, according to police.

When the traffic signal changed from red to green for traffic on the ramp, motorist Susan Durkin, 47, of Woodbury, who was driving a 2003 Dodge Neon, started to drive forward, but an unidentified vehicle that was traveling on Mile Hill Road drove through a red traffic signal, police said.

The Neon braked, and was struck from behind by motorist Jamie Fox, 32, of East Hampton, who was driving a 2000 Chrysler PT Cruiser, police said. The Chrysler was then struck from behind by motorist James Stevens, 37, of 84 Church Hill Road, who was driving a 1994 Volkswagen Jetta, police said.

There were no injuries in the accident. Police issued both Fox and Stevens written warnings for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Moving Violations

Police report that on the morning of December 29, they spotted motorist James Kinsella, 48, of Trumbull driving southward on South Main Street with an expired registration sticker on the vehicle he was driving. Police stopped Kinsella to investigate and charged him with displaying an improper registration sticker, driving under suspension, and driving without automotive insurance.

After processing Kinsella’s arrest, police released him on a $200 bond for a January 20 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Motorcycle Found

Police report that a red Honda motorcycle was found abandoned on December 29 on the side of Hanover Road beneath the Interstate 84 overpass. The owner may claim the vehicle by contacting police.

Chevy Off Road

Motorist Adam Prokop, 20, of 105 Brushy Hill Road was driving a 1989 Chevrolet Cavalier  northward on Toddy Hill Road about 8 pm December 23,  when he lost control of the auto, crossed the road, and went off the southbound road shoulder, coming to rest in a ditch, police said. Prokop was not injured. Police issued him a written warning for failure to drive to the right on a curve.

Botsford Hill Road

Motorist Ronald Durkin, 34, of Danbury, who was driving a 1997 International van southward on Botsford Hill Road about 5 pm December 22, told police that a silver-colored Mercedes sport-utility vehicle, which was traveling northward in the southbound lane near the Housatonic Railroad overpass, collided with his van and then left the scene of the accident. Durkin was not injured. Police ask anyone with information about the accident to contact them.

Rear-Ender

While traveling northward on Cherry Street, near its intersection with Black Cherry Lane about 12:30 pm December 29, motorist Jeffrey Levasseur, 16, of 2 Elana Lane, who was driving a 1998 Mercury Tracer, slowed and was then struck from behind by motorist Patricia Cianci, 29, of Southbury, who was driving a 1994 Isuzu Amigo, police report.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Cianci for following too closely  

Mt Pleasant Mishap

Motorist David Zemper, 32, of Southbury was driving a 1996 Ford Taurus northward on Mt Pleasant Road about 12:18 am December 27, when the Ford hit an object that apparently fell off an unidentified vehicle that was traveling southward, police said.

The southbound vehicle did not stop. Zemper was not injured. Police are investigating.

Intersection Crash

Motorist Gregory McMahon, 55, of West Hartford, who was driving a 1998 Ford Taurus, was stopped at a red traffic signal on westbound Wasserman Way and waiting to turn left onto the Exit 11 on-ramp of Interstate 84 at about 7 pm December 25, when motorist Jason Visokay, 25, of Southford, who was driving a 1992 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck, made a wide right turn off the Exit 11 off-ramp and struck the Ford, police said.

Kathryn McMahon, 16, who was a passenger in the Ford, experienced shoulder pain but declined medical attention, police said.

Police said they charged Visokay with failure to drive to the right and with evading responsibility in connection with the accident.
