Pie In The Sky For Pack 170

Come to any Pack Meeting for Cub Scout Pack 170, and you’ll see boys being honored with awards for scouting achievements, showing off their latest den project or telling about a trip they took. After all, Cub Scouting is for the boys, and the leaders are there to lend organization and structure. However, at the last pack meeting for Pack 170, the leaders showed that they know how to have fun, too.

After a fine opening ceremony by Den 19’s comical crew who told some hysterical Thanksgiving jokes, a quick report was delivered by Mr Steve Sieber, who chaired the pack’s food drive. The pack’s total donation to this year’s “Scouting for Food” was 136 bags.

When the drop-off was delivered to the pickup station in Danbury, “Jaws dropped,” said Mr Sieber. “About 60 bags of food from 12 different troops and packs had been delivered prior to our arrival. We literally doubled the amount of food brought in from the first 12 groups put together”.

After this presentation, the “Parade of Flags” took place. Each den was given the opportunity to show off their den flag to the pack by parading it around the front of the room. Pictures were taken of each den with their flag, which will be up on the pack’s Web site for future reference.

Then came the presentation of gifts for the pack’s Christmas “Adopt-a-family.” With the generosity and support of the pack’s parents and leaders, enough gifts and food were collected to make a family in Newtown feel just that much closer to the “Christmas Spirit,” and the boys received a well-deserved round of applause for their “good will” and efforts in shipping. Den 5, lead by Suzanne Davenport, will be wrapping and tagging the gifts for “Depot Day” as a part of their community service efforts.

Now came the fun. Cub Master Mike Salvatore announced he needed eight adult volunteers to show the boys that, as he put it, “We adults know how to have fun too!” With some hesitation and a bit of prodding, seven adults and Mr Salvatore came forth, at which time it was announced that the game to be played was called “Pie in the Sky.”

The volunteer leaders took this news with their customary good grace, knowing a sloppy, in-your-face pie eating contest was what Mr Salvatore had in mind. Each leader was provided with a big slice of chocolate cream pie, and at the count of three commenced to eat the pie without using a fork. The boys thought this was great, and Mr Salvatore quipped, “This pie is better without the fork!” The leaders all wound up with lots of pie, and big smiles, on their faces.

Wrapping up the meeting were den 13 and den 15, who again provided comic relief in the form of “the ugliest man in the world” skit. The next monthly pack meeting will be on January 31, which we can only hope will be as fun and successful as the November meeting.
