Guanghui Chen

Guanghui (Bright) Chen, 75, husband of Emily (Minjuan) Chen of Old Castle Drive, Newtown, died Monday, January 3, at his home.

He was born in China on March 21, 1923, son of the late Zhacke and Lie (Muxin) Chen. During World War II, he served in the Chinese Army and was assigned to the US Army Corps as an interpreter.

Following the War he came to the United States and attended Columbia University, graduating in 1950 with a BA degree in English and international relations. He received his master’s degree in political science in 1951 from the University of Wisconsin. He returned to Shanghai, China, and for many years served as a college professor.

He moved to the United States ten years ago and to Newtown two years ago.

He is survived, besides his wife, by a daughter, Ella Chen, and her husband, Jason Hsu, of Newtown; a brother, Guangyi Chen of China; a sister, Lixian Chen of China, and by two grandchildren, Andy Hsu and Allison Hsu, both of Newtown.

Funeral services will be held at the Newtown Congregational Church Saturday, January 8, at 2 pm with the Rev Steven Gordon officiating. Cremation will follow.

Friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Saturday from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm.
