Hazardous Intersection

Police report a serious accident involving two sport-utility vehicles at the hazardous intersection of Route 302 and Hattertown Road about 5:40 pm December 29.

Motorist Jose Paucar, 40, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2000 Honda CRV, was traveling westward on Hattertown Road at its intersection with Route 302, police said.

At that time, motorist Julie Obre, 41, of 7 Sutherland Drive, who was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Suburban, was traveling eastward on Route 302, according to police.

The Honda then attempted to cross in front of the oncoming Chevrolet as the Chevrolet was making a left curve in the road, resulting in the two SUVs colliding head-on, police said.

Dodgingtown firefighters extricated the three occupants of the Honda, police said.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps members transported Paucar and Honda passengers Manuelo Loja, 46, and Juan Cabrera, 47, both of Bridgeport, to Danbury Hospital to be treated for injuries, police said.

The accident is under investigation.

Bethel Man Faces Charges

Police report they stopped motorist Stephen Leonard, 20, of Bethel on Church Hill Road about 9:38 pm January 1, after learning that his vehicle’s registration had expired.

Police called in their dog to search the vehicle, after which the animal located drugs, according to police. Leonard was then charged with driving an unregistered vehicle, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Leonard was released on $50 bail for a January 19 court appearance.

Taunton Lake

Police report that Timothy Hoeffel, 22, of 12 Old Green Road was observed inside his vehicle, which was parked at Newtown Fish & Game Club’s Taunton Lake boat launch on Taunton Lake Road about 9:51 pm on December 30.

Police said they called in their dog to search for drugs, resulting in them finding drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.

Police arrested Hoeffel on charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and third degree criminal trespassing. He is free on a promise to appear January 13 in Danbury Superior Court.

Snow Crash

Motorist Eric Carasone, 45, of Derby was driving a 1994 BMW 540i sedan westward near 273 Berkshire Road about 5 pm December 31, when while rounding a curve, the auto’s rear end slid sideways, causing the auto to go out of control on the snowy road, police report.

The BMW slid off the right road shoulder. Carasone was not injured.

Jeremiah MVA

About 5:13 pm December 31, motorist Chris McArdle, 44, of 41 Bennetts Bridge Road, who was driving a 1997 Eagle Vision eastward near 72 Jeremiah Road, drove down a steep hill and lost control on the slippery street, police said.

The Eagle came to rest partially off the right side of the road. McArdle was not injured.

Virginia Motorist

Motorist Mario Alfredo Rangel Vega, 29, of Springfield, Va., was driving a 1991 Ford Explorer southward on a snowy Toddy Hill Road about 4:10 pm December 31, when the vehicle went out of control and struck guardrailing along the right road shoulder, police said. Vega was not injured in the crash, which happened near 159 Toddy Hill Road. Police verbally warned Vega for traveling too fast for conditions.

Vandalism Spree

Police report that sometime between 10 pm December 27 and 7:30 am December 28, someone vandalized six mailboxes along Cedar Hill Road. Police are investigating the property damage and ask anyone with information on the crimes to contact them at 426-5841.

Honda Crash

Motorist David Bunger, 19, of 6 Cedar Hill Road, who was driving a 1995 Honda sedan southward on Brushy Hill Road about 12:21 am December 31, lost control of the auto, crossed the roadway and struck a utility pole along the road’s left shoulder, police report. Ambulance volunteers transported Bunger to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries, police said. The accident is under investigation.

Sandy Hook Mishap

Motorist David Sochacki, 60, of 13 Bradley Lane, who was driving a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis eastward on Berkshire Road about 5:30 pm December 31, slowed to make a right turn onto Bradley Lane but slid on the snowy road and went down an embankment at the intersection, police said. Sandy Hook firefighters responded. There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Sochacki for making a restricted turn.

Swamp Road

Motorist Tshimanga Kapitaine, 43, of Bridgeport, who was driving a 2002 Ford Explorer northward on Swamp Road about 11 pm December 31, spun off the roadway and struck a tree, police report. There were no injuries. Police issued Kapitaine a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Ford Vs Hyundai

About 1:35 pm December 29, motorist Jennifer Underhill, 31, of Woodbury, who was driving a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe, stopped on westbound Wasserman Way at its intersection with Exit 11 of Interstate 84, police said.

Westbound motorist Elisha Bonaparte, 31, of Waterbury, who was driving a 1985 Ford dump truck, was unable to stop on the wet roadway and struck the rear end of the Hyundai, police said. Underhill reported pain and ambulance volunteers went to the scene, police said.

Police issued Bonaparte an infraction ticket for following too closely.

Honda Hits Rock

Motorist Melissa Gardiner, 25, of 6 Meadow Brook Road, who was driving a 1999 Honda Civic sedan westward on Button Shop Road about 5 pm December 31, slid on the snowy road and struck a rock, police said.

Gardiner was not injured. Police verbally warned her for making a restricted turn.

Toddy Hill

Motorist Robert Shaw, 39, of 34 Great Ring Road, who was driving a 1998 Mitsubishi southward near 128 Toddy Hill Road about 4:30 pm December 31, stopped due to a nearby motor vehicle accident, police said.

Due to snowy road conditions, southbound motorist Gavin Vandervoort-Levy, 21, of 86 Toddy Hill Road, who was driving a 2005 Subaru Legacy, was unable to stop and struck the rear end of the Mitsubishi, police said.

There were no injuries. Police verbally warned Vandervoort-Levy for traveling too fast for conditions.

Currituck Accident

Motorist Natalia Duarte, 18, of Brookfield, who was driving a 1995 Acura Integra southward on a snowy Currituck Road about 4 pm December 31, crossed into the northbound lane and then struck a mailbox at 146 Currituck Road, police said. Duarte was not injured. Police verbally warned her for failure to drive to the right.

Motorcycle Accident

During the evening rush at about 5:30 pm January 4, motorcyclist John J. O’Brien, Jr, 46, of Milford, who was driving a 2003 Ducati eastward on Berkshire Road near Zoar Road, lost control of the motorcycle and struck some guardrailing along the right road shoulder, police report.

The impact threw O’Brien from the motorcycle and he came to rest down an embankment along the right side of the road, police said.

Ambulance volunteers transported O’Brien to Danbury Hospital for treatment of a leg injury. Sandy Hook firefighters went to the accident, which created travel delays in the area.

Police are investigating the accident and ask any witnesses to contact them at 426-5841.
