Nighthawk Wrestlers Defeat Stratford

Newtown High School’s wrestling team defeated visiting Stratford 63-6, on January 6. The Nighthawks won five matches via pinfall, two by technical fall, and three in decisions. There were a trio of forfeits – two won by Newtown and a double forfeit – and Stratford came out on top in one of the 14 weight divisions.

The competition began with the 170-pound weight division, and Joe Accousti earned six points by pinning Erik Flores in 0:39. At 182, Anthony Falbo defeated Tristan Frownfelter via technical fall, 19-4, for five points; at 195, Alex Janiak pinned Manny Sainville in 2:38 to score six points; and at 220, Andy Hubina pinned Hamit Nasufi in 2:55 for another six points.

There were forfeits in the next three weight divisions as Tom Long won at 285, Nikolas Accousti won at 106, and Newtown and Stratford had a double forfeit at 113.

At 120, Stratford’s Michael Turzer pinned Justin Bogdanoff in 1:35 to score six points for the Red Devils. At 126, Aaron Occhipinti pinned Taysean Aliah in 0:46 for six more Newtown points.

Newtown won the next two bouts in 10-2 decisions, each producing four points, as Owen Walsh defeated Will Rooney at 132, and Jake Duarte defeated Shawn Chambers in the 138-pound class.

David Berquist pinned Anthony Wilcoxson in 0:38 for six points. Ed Lovely topped Will McCallister via technical fall, 17-2, for five points. Peter Mihok edged Jordan Carrion in an 8-7 decision for three points.

The Nighthawks will participate in the Greater Hartford Open on Saturday, January 9, and return home to take on New Milford on Wednesday, January 13, beginning at 6 pm.
