Track Participants Shine In SWC Developmental Meet

Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ indoor track teams participated in a South-West Conference Developmental meet at Wesleyan University in Middletown on January 3. Highlights are as follows:

Makenna Cerney bettered her state championships qualifying time in the 55 meter hurdles to 9.87. Shelby Tolla qualified for states in the 300 with a time of 45.40 as did Shay Fahey in the 300 with a 46.69. Tolla and Fahey also qualified for SWC championships in the 55 dash with times of 8.15 and 8.05, respectively. Emma Bayuk qualified for states in the 600 with a time of 1:47.61, and bettered her state qualifying time in the 1600 to 5:33.82. Erin Tressler qualified for states in the 1000 with a time of 3:21.61, and bettered her state qualifying time for the 1600 with a time of 5:39.01. Lauren Russo qualified for states in the pole vault event with a jump of 8-6.

Other SWC qualifiers are: Jackie Sgobbo 7-0 in pole vault; Kiera Viellette 6-6 in pole vault; Emma Lloyd 8-0 in pole vault; Camryn Ciccarelli 1:53.79 in the 600; Maddie Findley 3:32.48 in the 1000; Sarah Mawdsley 5:55.99 in the 1600. Previous SWC qualifiers are Alexa Reilly 4-6 in the high jump; Bailey Smith 4-4 in the high jump; and Shay Fahey 13-5 in the long jump event.

On the boys’ side, Newtown recorded more strong results. Cole Terry qualified for Class LL State Championships and SWC Championships with a time of 8.91 in the 55 Hurdles. He also qualified for the SWC Championships in the long jump with a jump of 18-4.4, and in the pole vault. Scott Martin qualified for the state and SWC championships in the pole vault event with a jump of 10-6. James Carney qualified for the state and conference championships in the 300 dash with a time of 39.69. The sprint medley relay team qualified for both the SWC and state championships with a time of 3:57.47. The team comprises Kevin Arther, Jason Ferrari, Carney, and David Csordas. Joel Duval, Ethan Burg, and Csordas all qualified for the SWC Championships in the 1000.
