The National Weather Service-New York office has issued a Snow Squall Warning that includes Newtown among the coverage area. The Warning is in effect until 10:45 am.

The sun is shining and the skies are currently blue and cloudless, but according to the weather service, a line of snow showers will affect Fairfield and southwestern New Haven counties in Connecticut, along with areas of Westchester, Orange, and Rockland counties in New York.

At 9:46 am EST, a line of snow showers was extending from Newburgh to near Stamford. Movement was east at 35 mph, according to the weather service.

Winds in excess of 30 mph are possible with this line of snow showers, also according to NWS.

The weather service is reporting that the squall will be near Port Chester and Rye around 9:50 am, Darien around 10:00 am, Norwalk around 10:10 am, Carmel around 10:15 am, Lake Carmel and New York-Newark around 10:20 am, and Brookfield and New Fairfield around 10:30 AM EST.

Visibilities will drop quickly to less than a quarter of a mile with this activity.

“Conditions can deteriorate rapidly in winter weather situations,” the service is warning. “Be prepared for snow or ice covered roads. Slow down and allow extra time when traveling.”

This is the second time in less than a month that such a warning has been issued for this area. The National Weather Service issued a Snow Squall Warning on December 18, just a few minutes ahead of a brief but intense weather event.
