The National Weather Service in Upton, N.Y., has issued a Snow Squall Warning that includes Fairfield County. The Warning will remain in effect until 4:15 pm.

At 3:18 pm, a dangerous snow squall was located along a line extending from Tolland to Nanuet to Victory Gardens, moving southeast at 35 mph.

Hazards for snow squalls include whiteout conditions, zero visibility in heavy snow and blowing snow, and wind gusts up to 40 mph.

The weather service is urging drivers to consider “avoiding or delaying travel until the snow squall passes your location. If you must travel, use extra caution and allow extra time. Rapid changes in visibility and slick road conditions may lead to accidents.

“Reduce your speed and turn on headlights,” the service continued. “During snow squalls, the visibility may suddenly drop to near zero in whiteout conditions.”

For those who must be on the road during a snow squall, reducing speed is strongly encouraged.

“Rapid changes in visibility and road conditions are expected with this dangerous snow squall. Be alert for sudden whiteout conditions,” the Snow Squall Warning concluded.
