Domenic Cartelli scored a hat-trick, and Scott McLean added a goal in Newtown High School’s hockey team’s 4-3 win over visiting Lyman Hall-Haddam Killingworth-Coginchaug at Danbury Ice Arena, on January 9. Newtown goaltender Nicholas Chaloux kicked aside 33 shots as the Nighthawks improved to 5-2 this season.

Cartelli scored a pair of shorthanded goals on the same shift during Newtown’s three-goal second period, and added his third tally late in the third period. With the Nighthawks clinging to a 3-2 lead late in regulation, Cartelli skated through the neutral zone and scored from in close to make it 4-2 with 53 seconds remaining. The insurance tally turned out to be the decisive one as Newtown surrendered a goal with nine seconds left.

This marked the second straight game in which a Nighthawk logged a hat-trick; McLean achieved the three-goal feat in a 4-3 loss to New Milford, on January 6.

Read more about the game in the January 15 print edition of The Bee.
