Failure To Grant Right Of Way

Newtown Police report Carol Lurie, 66, of Plymouth, NH, operating a 2021 Toyota Venza, was traveling eastbound on Church Hill Road at 6:18 am December 23. Gina Paradiso, 21, of New Milford, operating a 2015 Honda CR-V, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road. Lurie attempted to make a left turn into the Interstate 84 westbound ramp and the front bumper of her vehicle struck the front bumper of Paradiso’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

Lurie was issued a verbal warning for failure of a driver making a left turn to grant right of way to oncoming traffic.

Intersection Collision

Newtown Police report Nathan Meleskewich, 16, of Southbury, operating a 2007 Volvo S60 2.5T AWD, was traveling northbound on Berkshire Road at 6:58 am December 23. Salvatore Scianna, 40, of Southbury, operating a 2019 GMC Sierra At4, was traveling southbound on Berkshire Road. Meleskewich approached a green light at the intersection of Berkshire Road and Wasserman Way, and continued through the intersection, failing to grant right of way to Scianna, and Meleskewich’s vehicle struck Scianna’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

The report did not indicate whether any charges were filed against either driver.

Hit And Run Driver Sought

Newtown Police report Samuel Perkins, 33, of Sherman, operating a 2019 Subaru Legacy, was traveling westbound on Wasserman Way at 7:48 pm December 23. An unidentified vehicle traveling eastbound on Wasserman Way crossed over the double yellow lines into the westbound lane, striking the driver’s side of Perkins’ vehicle. Perkins’ vehicle moved to the right and struck the curbing on the westbound shoulder. The unidentified vehicle left the scene.

Perkins complained of neck pain. Newtown EMS came to the scene and evaluated him, but he refused to be treated or transported to the hospital.

Struck Tree After Sliding

Newtown Police report Madelyn Andrews, 21, of Shelton, was traveling northbound on Flat Swamp Road at 7:49 am December 25. Andrews told police her vehicle lost control when it hit a patch of ice and went off the northbound shoulder of the roadway. Andrews’ vehicle struck a tree off the northbound shoulder of the road.

Andrews was issued an infraction for making an improper turn.

Hit Black Ice Then Struck Pole

Newtown Police report Michael Dykty, 59, of Monroe, operating a 2006 Toyota Tundra, was traveling northbound on South Main Street near Ethan Allen Road at 7:30 am December 26. Dykty’s vehicle went off the road and shoulder to the right and struck a utility pole. Dykty told police he hit a patch of black ice.

No injuries were reported.

Too Fast For Conditions

Newtown Police report Michael Dran, 65, of Bethel, operating a 2007 Saturn Ion, was traveling westbound on Dodgingtown Road at 8:17 am December 26. Dran’s vehicle reportedly spun out and went into the shoulder of the eastbound lane, striking the guard rail.

No injuries were reported.

Dran was given a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Windshield Broken From Hitting Sign

Newtown Police report Daniel Jaramillo-Rivadeneira, 40, of Danbury, operating a 2007 Toyota RAV4, was traveling westbound on Berkshire Road at 3:17 pm December 26. Jaramillo-Rivadeneira told police he looked down at his GPS and his vehicle went off the road, and struck a sign, smashing his windshield.

No injuries were reported.

Jaramillo-Rivadeneira was given a verbal warning for making an improper turn.

Hit Light Fixture

Newtown Police report Rita Rozhavskaya, 71, of Newtown, operating a 2013 Toyota RAV4 Limited, was traveling eastbound on Bryan Lane at 8:54 am December 28. While negotiating a right hand curve in the road way, Rozhavskaya’s vehicle started to slide on the ice-covered roadway.

The vehicle left the eastbound land, crossed over the westbound lane and onto the westbound shoulder, where it struck a light fixture in the parking lot of 224 South Main Street.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed to Modzelewski’s due to disabling damage.

Rozhavskaya was issued a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Failure To Maintain Reasonable Distance

Newtown Police report Jamell Battle, 22, of Waterbury, operating a 2008 Toyota Camry, was traveling southbound on Main Street at 5:14 pm December 28. Battle was traveling behind a 2005 Ford Mustang operated by Derrick Lewis, 20, of Bonita Springs, Fla. Lewis came to a stop due to traffic stopped in front of him. Battle was unable to stop and the front of his vehicle struck the rear of Lewis’ vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

Battle was given a verbal warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Use Of Motor Vehicle Without Permission

Newtown Police report Adam Weinberg, 60, of New Windsor, N.Y., was arrested at 11:47 am December 29, on the charge of use of a motor vehicle without permission. He was released on a promise to appear with a court date of January 12 at Danbury Superior Court.

Rear-Ended At Intersection

Newtown Police report Brianna DiFalco, 27, of Monroe, operating a 2018 Dodge Durango, was traveling westbound on Route 34 at 10:43 am December 30. DiFalco was traveling behind a 2022 Subaru Impreza operated by Nicoletta McMullan, 72, of Sandy Hook. Both vehicles were stopped at the intersection of Wasserman Way in the left turn only lane. McMullan began moving into the intersection and stopped. DiFalco had also begun moving and could not stop in time, with the front end of her vehicle making contact with the rear bumper of McMullan’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

DiFalco was given a verbal warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Hit Car Entering Parking Lot

Newtown Police report Daniel Jaeger, 18, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2002 Acura 3.5 RL, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road at 2:35 pm December 30. Jaeger was traveling behind a 2003 Honda Accord operated by Anthony Shrutkowski, 65, of Sandy Hook. Shrutkowski’s vehicle came to a stop in the westbound lane to make a left turn into the parking lot of St Rose Church, 46 Church Hill Road, when the front section of Jaeger’s vehicle made contact with the rear section of Shurtkowski’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

Jaeger was issued a written warning for traveling an unreasonable distance apart causing an accident.

Arrested For Drunk Driving

Newtown Police report at 12:52 am January 1, Trevor Palmer, 21, of 111 Alpine Drive, Sandy Hook, was involved in a one-car motor vehicle accident on Jeremiah Road at Fox Hollow Lane. Following an investigation, Palmer was arrested for operating under the influence of alcohol or drugs and making an improper turn. He was released on a $200 bond with a court date of January 19 at Danbury Superior Court.

Collision At Exit 9

Newtown Police report Nickolaos Kalivrousis, 86, of Newtown, operating a 2017 Ram Truck 2500 Power, was traveling southbound on Hawleyville Road at 3:44 pm January 2. Pedro Riezgo, 68, of Brookfield, operating a 2000 Hyundai Sonata GLS, was traveling northbound on Hawleyville Road. Kalivrousas began to turn left in front of Riezgo’s vehicle onto the Interstate 84 exit 9 on-ramp and the front ends of both vehicles collided.

No injuries were reported.

Kalivrousis was issued an infraction for failure to grant the right of way at an intersection.

Newtown Police Officer Maryhelen McCarthy directs traffic around a 2-car crash that occurred on Church Hill Road around noon Thursday, December 30. According to the police report Caleb R. Silvia, 21, of Pawcatuck, operating a 2013 Honda Civic LX was stopped in the left westbound travel lane, waiting to turn left into the parking lot of the Mobil station at 62 Church Hill. The 2016 Mercedes-Benz C3004M being operated by Anthony D. Marte-Rodriguez, 24, of Springfield, Mass., at left, was traveling in the right eastbound travel lane on Church Hill Road. Another vehicle stopped in the left eastbound travel lane of Church Hill Road to allow Silvia to turn left. As Silvia attempted to make the turn, the Mercedes struck the rear passenger side of the Honda. Marte-Rodriguez reported disorientation after the crash. He was checked for injuries, but did not go to a hospital. Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Newtown Hook & Ladder also responded to the crash. Both vehicles were towed after the collision.
