Another year of counted cross, lazy daisy, and cable stitching began on Thursday, January 9, at Christ the King Lutheran Church.

Founded in the early 1980s, the Friends of Counted Embroidery group have been meeting for more than 30 years, bringing newcomers, as well as keeping the longtime regulars.

Judy Killmer, a regular attendee of these embroidery meetings, has been taking the drive from New York State to Newtown for nearly ten years.

“It’s a wonderful group of people who love, and share the love, of embroidery,” said Ms Killmer.

Each month there is a show and tell of individual work, as well as lectures, volunteer teachers, and in-group lessons from members. Ms. Killmer raved about the projects they do as a group at meetings.

“The camaraderie is great,” she said.

Lynn Harrison, treasurer of the local group, said FCE is welcoming of all level embroiderers.

“We used to have over 125 people in the 80s. We even had a waiting list,” said Ms Harrison. Though their guest list has dwindled to about 30 regulars, spirits certainly have not. Later she added, “We’re just a group that is really eager to let people know these talents still exist.”

Friends of Counted Embroidery meets the second Thursday of every month at Christ the King Lutheran Church. Snacks and coffee are supplied.
