To the Editor:

The holidays may be behind us now, but we can continue to celebrate a spirit of giving and sharing. Right here in Connecticut, we have many residents of all ages who are active volunteers, continually making selfless contributions of time and energy to their communities, their schools, and their churches. The actions of these people are exceptional; they improve the quality of life for so many of their friends and neighbors.

Volunteers make up the heart of countless organizations throughout our state and provide strong foundations in our communities. As your Lieutenant Governor, I have met many of these volunteers while visiting all the state’s 169 towns and I can honestly tell you that they are unsung heroes who have made Connecticut a great place to live, work, play, and thrive.

I introduced a program nearly five years ago that formally recognizes the extraordinary volunteer efforts made by both individuals and groups. I initiated the “Lt. Governor’s Connecticut Treasures” award and have presented the awards monthly to individuals and groups from across Connecticut.

As a spin-off to the Connecticut Treasures award, I initiated “Rell’s Reward” over three years ago. It is similar to the Connecticut Treasures award, but is aimed at young people in our state who have volunteered their time by lending a hand to their neighbors and have made a positive difference in the lives of others. With about 25 percent of our state’s population aged 18 and younger, there is a great opportunity to recognize our youth.

One of the most important aspects of these award programs has been the people who have nominated individuals or groups in win the Lt Governor’s Connecticut Treasures award or “Rell’s Reward.” I am asking you to help play this key role in the award programs and nominate an individual or group today.

For a nomination form for either award, please contact my office at 860-524-7384 or access my website at www.ct.gov/otlg.

I look forward to hearing from you and learning about Connecticut Treasures and “Rell’s Reward” winners from your community.

Sincerely,

M. Jodi Rell

Lieutenant Governor

State Capitol, Room 304, Hartford                        January 22, 2004
