Western CT Bird Club To Meet

SOUTHBURY — The February 17 meeting of the Western Connecticut Bird Club will feature a slide-illustrated lecture entitled “Belize-Little Known Jewel of Central America” by naturalist and wildlife photographer Sam Fried.

With some of the largest remaining tracts of undisturbed rain forest in Central America, Belize hosts myriad species of tropical birds, mammals, reptiles, and insects. In addition, it has the history of its ancient Maya cities.

Mr Fried will concentrate on several locations: Lamanai Outpost Lodge, adjacent to the extensive Lamanai ruins; Chan Chich, home of jungle cats and many wild birds, and Crooked Tree Wildlife Preserve, site of vast congregations of wading birds.

A former president of the Hartford Audubon Society, Sam Fried has photographs and articles published in field guides, books and magazines worldwide.

The meeting of the Western Connecticut Bird Club will be held on Thursday, February 17, at 7:30 pm at the Rochambeau Middle School, Peter Street in Southbury. Members of the public are invited free of charge. For further information, call 203/744-8223 or 203/938-9165.

The Southerly Cross Highway, which later became Glover Avenue and Sugar Street (Route 302) in Newtown, was 132 feet wide when it was first constructed.
