Newtown High School junior Matt Pachniuk’s decision not to go out for the boys’ varsity basketball team has turned out to be a blessing for the men’s basketball league at the Newtown Health & Fitness Club.

Matt put on an incredible display last Thursday night, scoring 62 points to lead Denmo’s of Southbury to a 76-63 in over Colonial Mitsubishi. Matt buried 10 three-pointers in the performance of the year so far.

But, thus far, it has been the wily veterans who have held the spotlight most weeks. The veteran group on the Villa Restaurant team, which includes Dan O’Handley, has been the big surprise of the season so far, jumping out to an 8-1 record. But look out for veteran Gary Doyon and the Marcucilli Agency, which trails by just a game. The veterans of My Place Restaurant are not far behind them, as is World Wine of Liquor, which is lead by Mike Storms.

Denmo’s of Southbury 76, Colonial Mitsubishi 63: It was the Matt Pachniuk show in this one. One of the league’s younger players, Matt is also proving to be one of the best. In fact, he leads the league in scoring at about 30 points per game. Dave Adams scored 36 points and Doug Porcelli added 22 in the loss.

World of Wine & Liquor 47, Berkshire Motors 46: Mike Storms scored 20 points and Levenson Morgan added 13 to lead World of Wine & Liquor. Kris Nawrocki scored 26 points in the loss.

Marcucilli Agency 103, The Inn at Newtown 73: Gary Doyon hit for 48 points and Bob Rodgers added 26 to lead the winners. Larry Manzi scored 23 points for the Inn at Newtown, while Bill Schiebe chipped in with 19.

Villa Restaurant 62, Berkshire Motors 57: Chris Oberhammer, the league’s second leading scorer, tossed in 25 points, Dan O’Handley hit for 16 and Jerry Reidy added 14 as Villa Restaurant rallied from a 16-point deficit. Berkshire Motors was led by Chris Nawrocki’s 29 points and 10 each from Mark Svanda and Jamie Maguire.

Marcuccilli Agency 79, My Place Restaurant 59: Gary Doyon lit it up for 34 points and Bob Rogers added 19 to lead Marcuccilli Agency. My Place, which lost its second in a row, got 17 points from Tom Villa.

World of Wine & Spirits 66, Colonial Mitsubishi 54: Pat Reilly erupted for 25 points as World of Wine & Spirits pulled away. Cody Forte, back after an early-season absence, led Colonial Mitsubishi with 23 points. Doug Porcelli added 18 in the loss.

Villa Restaurant 75, My Place Restaurant 68: Dan O’Handley ripped the nets for 26 points, while Chris Oberhammer and Jerry Reidy combined for 41 more as Villa Restaurant held on in the battle of the restaurants. For My Place, Matt Gallagher led the way with 20 and Mike Kirk and Chris Kachur each added 17.

Berkshire Motors 75, Denmo’s 48: Chris Nawrocki scored 30 points and Ian Engelman added 21 as Berkshire Motors rolled. Matt Pachniuk paced Denmo’s with 23.

The Inn at Newtown 81, Colonial Mitsubishi 49: Larry Manzi’s 26 points led four players who scored in double digits for The Inn. Jim Bowers added 23, Paul Carpenter threw in 17 and Frank Gavel contributed 13.

My Place Restaurant 77, Colonial Mitsubishi 53: My Place rolled behind 18 points apiece from Dave Kingsley and Chris Kachur.

Marcuccilli Agency 79, Denmo’s 77: Marcuccilli Agency rallied from an 11-point halftime deficit to win as Kevin Carolan scored 31 points and Bob Rogers added 26. Pachniuk led Denmo’s with 26 points and Doug Porcelli and Ray Baghdady added 19 each.
