Auto Theft Task Force Reports On Activity; Lists Antitheft Measures

The state police’s Statewide Auto Theft Task Force reports that during 2006, its members recovered a total of 458 stolen motor vehicles.

The aggregate value of the recovered stolen vehicles was more than $2.9 million, according to a statement from the task force. The organization made 117 arrests during 2006.

The number of stolen vehicles recovered, the value of the recovered vehicles, and the number of arrests made in 2006 all represent significant increases compared to the previous year, according to the task force.

The task force is comprised of state police, some local police, the state Department of Motor Vehicles, and insurance investigators.

State police are offering the public some tips on how to prevent auto theft:

Keys should never be left within vehicles. Autos should always be locked when unattended. Never hide a spare set of keys on a vehicle. Always park in well-lit areas at night. Always park in parking lots with attendants.

Autos should never be left unattended with their engines running. Completely close a vehicle’s windows when parking. Do not leave valuables in plain sight within vehicles when the vehicles are unattended.

Vehicles should be parked with the front wheels turned toward the side along curbstones, in driveways, and in parking lots to make the vehicle more difficult to tow away.
