Troop 270 Celebrates

Its 52nd Eagle Scout

On January 7 Boy Scout Troop 270 inducted its 52nd Eagle Scout.

Colin O’Connor was raised to the rank of Eagle Scout during a special Court of Honor ceremony. The troop meets at Dodgingtown Firehouse, which is where the ceremony was also held.

The ceremony was attended by Colin’s family, the members of Troop 270, and several special guests. The Eagle Scout award is Scouting’s highest honor and is earned only by a few who participate in Scouting. Colin had several difficult requirements to complete, including leadership positions in the troop, earning a minimum of 21 merit badges, and completing a challenging service project.

Colin’s Eagle Project involved creating a hiking trail in Newtown that connected the Holcombe Wildlife Preserve Blue Trail with the White Trail on the Holcombe Memorial property. The existing Blue Trail was an Eagle Scout Project completed several years ago; Colin’s efforts created a natural extension that joined the two 80-acre properties. His efforts will benefit residents of the community for years to come.

At the ceremony each Eagle Scout addresses the audience with his thoughts about scouting.

“The Scout slogan is do a good turn daily,” said Colin. “This slogan is something that should not only apply to Scouts. Helping one another and thinking of others should be a trend that all people in society adhere to. I urge all members of the audience to listen to the Scout slogan and do a good turn daily.

“I know that I have personally kept these words in my mind on a daily basis, and helping others is one of the most rewarding and gratifying things in life,” he continued. “I know that I will continue to follow the Scout slogan for the rest of my life because helping others and simple acts of kindness are not seen nearly enough in today’s world.”

Colin was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout and he participated in scouting for ten years. During this time he earned many awards, including Cub Scouting’s highest award, The Arrow of Light.

Colin is a 2006 graduate of Newtown High School. He is currently attending Central Connecticut State University, working toward a teaching degree concentrating in physical education and health.

“The Scouts and Scout leaders of Troop 270 want to offer Colin their thanks,” said Peter Lubinsky, the Scoutmaster for Troop 270, “for being a role model for the younger scouts, and their congratulations for his achievement.”
